Company

Company overview

Northwest Bancshares is the parent of Northwest Bank, a community bank serving individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania, western New York, northeastern Ohio and Indiana. The bank uses customer deposits as its main funding source to make home, consumer and business loans and finance commercial properties. It also holds securities that pay interest. Interest from borrowers and securities supplies most of its income.

The bank has emphasized commercial property and business lending, often with adjustable rates and shorter maturities than home mortgages. Its earnings depend on borrowers making payments and on the gap between lending and investment yields and funding costs. Keeping deposits matters: replacing them with more expensive funding can narrow that gap. Local business conditions and property values strongly affect repayment.

The parent company relies mainly on dividends from Northwest Bank for its own cash needs, and capital rules and dividend restrictions limit those payments. The bank’s concentration in real estate lending also means regulators could require tighter risk controls or restrict multifamily and commercial property lending.
