Company

Company overview

City Holding Co is a community-bank holding company whose principal business runs through its wholly owned City National Bank. The bank serves households and businesses mainly in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and southeastern Ohio. It takes customer deposits and lends to homebuyers, property owners and businesses, while also providing cash-management and wealth-management services.

Customer deposits supply most of its funding. Borrowers pay interest on loans, and investment securities also generate interest income. What remains after paying interest on deposits and borrowings is its main earnings source. The business therefore depends on retaining deposits and on the gap between lending and investment yields and funding costs. Much of its lending is tied to residential and commercial real estate, making borrowers’ repayment capacity and property values in its markets particularly important.

Banking rules restrict activities, lending and investments and require minimum capital. The parent company receives most of its cash through dividends from City National Bank, and legal and regulatory limits constrain those payments.
