Company

Company overview

United Bankshares Inc serves businesses and individuals through United Bank, primarily in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. It takes customer deposits and uses that funding to make loans and hold interest-earning investments. Borrowers pay interest, while the bank pays interest on deposits and borrowings; the difference supplies most of its earnings.

Commercial lending makes up the largest part of its loan book, and much of that lending is secured by real estate. The company also earns deposit-service and brokerage fees. Its mortgage business makes home loans for sale to other lenders and investors, earning origination fees and gains on sales rather than generally keeping the servicing rights.

The business depends on retaining deposits at manageable costs, borrowers repaying their loans and property values supporting collateral. Market interest rates affect the spread it earns. Banking rules restrict its lending and investments, and minimum capital requirements can limit dividends and share repurchases.
