Bank of the James Financial Group serves small and medium-sized businesses and individuals through Bank of the James. The bank takes customer deposits and uses that funding to make business, property and consumer loans and hold investment securities. Borrowers pay interest, while the bank pays interest on deposits and borrowings; the difference supplies most of the group’s income.
The bank’s Mortgage Division also arranges home loans, closes them with its own funds and sells them to financial institutions under advance purchase commitments, earning gains on those sales. Separately, Pettyjohn, Wood & White, Inc. (PWW) manages client investment portfolios and provides financial planning. Clients pay advisory fees based on the market value of assets managed, so that income depends on both markets and client deposits or withdrawals.
The banking business depends on stable customer deposits, funding costs and borrowers’ ability to repay. Lending remains concentrated around Lynchburg, Virginia, and most loans are secured by commercial real estate, tying repayment and collateral values to the local economy and property market.
The parent company receives its cash income principally through dividends from the bank and PWW. Capital requirements and other legal and regulatory restrictions limit those payments, including when the bank must seek approval before paying dividends.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

Atlantic Union Bankshares Corporation earningsAUB
Atlantic Union Bankshares’ report will show whether Virginia households and businesses are giving it more deposits, loans and investment business, intensifying competition for Bank of the James.
Read deposit growth alongside the interest cost of those deposits, and check loan growth. Deposits rising without funding costs climbing sharply, while loans keep growing, suggests the larger bank is not plainly squeezing Bank of the James’s local business. Rising deposit costs or slowing loans point to tougher deposit competition and more pressure on Bank of the James’s net interest margin—the income left after deposit and other funding interest costs.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Bank of the James earns most of its income from the spread between interest on loans and investments and what it pays for deposits and borrowings, so Fed rate decisions can change its net interest income.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates can lift income on loans and investments that reprice or are newly made, but can also raise what Bank of the James pays to retain deposits and fund borrowing; the net effect depends on which costs and earnings adjust more and how quickly.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates can reduce income on loans and investments that reprice or are newly made, while easing what Bank of the James pays for deposits and borrowing; the net effect depends on which earnings and costs adjust more and how quickly.
