Company

Company overview

Varonis Systems helps organizations see and automatically control their data across cloud services, business software applications and on-premises systems. Its Varonis Data Security Platform serves organizations of all sizes, but its sales efforts mainly target larger enterprises. Customers pay for access to the software, and distributors and resellers handle nearly all sales, making these partners central to how revenue reaches Varonis.

Cloud-hosted software subscriptions now provide most revenue; self-hosted software licenses, maintenance and services provide the rest. The business depends on customers renewing subscriptions and buying additional capabilities. Varonis has largely moved to cloud delivery and plans to end its self-hosted business at the end of 2026, so converting the remaining self-hosted customers is an important part of that transition.

Encryption export controls and sanctions limit where and to whom Varonis can sell. Data-localization laws can also restrict its ability to provide cloud services in some markets.

Watch AvePoint's Control and Resilience suites: they put these overlapping capabilities into a broader platform that AvePoint says can replace separate tools.

  • Rubrik overlaps with Varonis in helping enterprises identify and protect sensitive data against cyber threats, though Rubrik also helps recover data after an attack. Watch its Security Cloud Enterprise subscription, which adds continuous data-risk monitoring—the part closest to Varonis's data-security offering.

  • Netskope competes with Varonis for enterprise spending on sensitive-data protection: its cloud tools prevent data leaks and assess data-security risks, overlapping with Varonis's visibility and control over enterprise data.

  • Zscaler competes with Varonis through data-security subscriptions sold to enterprises, within a broader cloud-security platform. Watch its data-security offering for large global enterprises, a customer group that overlaps with Varonis's focus on larger organizations.

  • Palo Alto Networks competes with Varonis for enterprise data-security purchases through tools that assess data-security risks and prevent data leaks.

  • Microsoft competes with Varonis for enterprise data-security purchases through Purview, which classifies data, governs access and prevents data leaks.

  • SailPoint overlaps with Varonis in enterprise access-governance purchases: SailPoint manages which identities can access applications and sensitive data, while Varonis automates controls over the data itself. Watch its Identity Security Cloud and customer-hosted IdentityIQ offerings, which serve buyers with different readiness for cloud subscriptions.

  • Commvault and Varonis both depend on enterprise spending to protect data from cyber threats, but Commvault protects and recovers data while Varonis controls access and exposure across cloud and on-premises systems. Commvault Cloud subscriptions offer a window into purchases of data protection and recovery, rather than Varonis's access controls.

  • Tenable and Varonis share exposure to enterprise spending on cloud and identity security: Tenable finds vulnerabilities and routes attackers could take, while Varonis finds and controls exposed data in cloud and on-premises systems. Watch Tenable One's cloud and identity capabilities for a view of purchases aimed at reducing those broader risks.

  • Rapid7 and Varonis both sell to security teams seeking to see and reduce exposures, but Rapid7 covers vulnerabilities and threats while Varonis focuses on enterprise data. Watch Rapid7's Command Platform, which combines finding exposures with detecting and responding to threats, for the broader security purchases surrounding data protection.

  • Qualys and Varonis both depend on enterprise security teams buying tools to find and reduce risks: Qualys sells vulnerability, compliance and cloud-security tools, while Varonis controls data exposure. Watch customers adding Qualys Cloud Apps to their subscriptions for a view of spending across these broader security needs.

  • CrowdStrike and Varonis both depend on enterprise security subscriptions and decisions to consolidate tools onto fewer platforms: Falcon detects and responds to threats, while Varonis protects data. Watch Falcon's added modules, which reuse data from the same sensor rather than requiring another sensor deployment.
