Company

Company overview

Tenable Holdings, Inc. helps businesses and government agencies identify weaknesses in their technology systems and decide which to fix first. Its Tenable One platform combines information about assets, vulnerabilities and possible attack routes across IT and cloud environments. It uses AI to analyze that information and recommend actions. The Nessus vulnerability-assessment product line underpins its enterprise platform.

Organizations pay mainly for subscriptions, generally priced by the number of monitored IP addresses or IT assets. Most revenue reaches Tenable through distributors, which sell to resellers serving the end users. Ingram Micro accounts for a substantial share of revenue, making it an important distribution partner, although no single end customer dominates sales.

The business depends on customers renewing subscriptions and expanding the assets they cover. Cloud assessments also depend on cloud providers allowing access to their environments. Export controls and sanctions restrict where Tenable can sell or deploy its software, while privacy laws can limit how it processes and transfers customer data across borders.

Tenable’s results hinge on enterprise spending to identify and prioritize security exposures amid competition from vulnerability and cloud-security vendors, including Wiz, which is absent from this list.

  • Qualys, Inc. competes directly with Tenable for enterprise security teams buying software to find assets, assess vulnerabilities and decide which fixes come first. Watch customers’ expansion of Qualys Cloud Apps subscriptions, which include asset management, vulnerability management and risk remediation.

  • Rapid7, Inc. competes with Tenable for enterprises buying platforms to identify vulnerabilities and prioritize fixes across IT and cloud assets. Watch Rapid7’s Command Platform, which combines that work with threat detection and response in one offering for security teams.

  • Palo Alto Networks, Inc. challenges Tenable in cloud security by selling integrated security platforms that replace customers’ separate security products. Watch its efforts to consolidate those purchases, a competitive pressure on Tenable Cloud Security’s tools for finding cloud misconfigurations, risky access permissions and vulnerabilities.

  • CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. competes with Tenable for enterprise security customers: its Falcon subscriptions center on protecting endpoints, while Tenable focuses on identifying and prioritizing security exposures. Watch customers adding Falcon modules, which extend security functions without requiring additional sensors.
