Businesses and government agencies use Commvault Systems to back up data and restore data, applications and identity systems after disruptions or cyber incidents. Its Commvault Cloud platform works across customers’ own infrastructure, cloud platforms and hosted applications. Customers can run the software themselves or use a cloud-hosted service. Term-based software licenses and hosted subscriptions bring in most revenue; support contracts also contribute a substantial share.
Most sales pass through partners rather than directly to customers, with resellers the largest distribution channel. Revenue depends heavily on the distributor identified as Partner A, while Partner B also contributes a meaningful share. These distribution agreements are non-exclusive, and resellers can sell competing products.
The subscription business depends on customers renewing and maintaining or expanding the workloads they protect. The software must keep working with changing third-party systems, and some offerings rely on Microsoft Azure and other providers’ infrastructure. Privacy and data-localization rules constrain how data is handled, while government security certifications and authorizations can restrict which contracts the company can serve.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Commvault’s results hinge on enterprise demand for data protection and cyber recovery and competition with Rubrik, Cohesity and Veeam; Cohesity and Veeam are missing from this list.
Rubrik competes directly with Commvault for enterprise subscriptions that protect data and restore it after ransomware attacks. Watch Rubrik Security Cloud subscriptions, particularly its Business and Enterprise editions, which add ransomware monitoring and cyber recovery capabilities.
AvePoint, Inc. competes with Commvault for customers paying to back up SaaS data and recover it after ransomware attacks. Its Resilience suite, rather than its broader workplace-governance and modernization offerings, is the product to watch for this overlap.
Varonis Systems and Commvault both depend on enterprises spending to secure data: Varonis sells tools to see and control data across cloud and on-premises systems, while Commvault protects and recovers it. Varonis’s sales to larger organizations are the customer segment to watch for that shared demand.
Backblaze, Inc. overlaps with Commvault in backing up customers’ computers, but focuses on simpler computer backup and cloud storage. Its flat-rate Computer Backup subscriptions, which automatically back up computers and external drives, are the relevant business to watch rather than B2 Cloud Storage.

Commvault’s report will show whether its SaaS business is growing recurring revenue while existing customers expand their spending.
Read SaaS annual recurring revenue (ARR, the annualized value of active recurring contracts) growth alongside SaaS net dollar retention. Retention measures how much recurring revenue remains from customers at the start of the period after churn and downsells, offset by expansions; above 100% means that group spends more overall. If SaaS ARR grows steadily and retention stays above 100%, existing customers’ expansions are more than offsetting losses and the recurring base is widening. If ARR growth slows and retention falls toward or below 100%, growth from existing customers is fading and Commvault must rely more on new customers to fill the gap.
Varonis Systems, Inc. earningsVRNS
Varonis’s report will show whether large enterprises are still buying data-security tools, offering a demand signal for Commvault’s sales to enterprise customers.
Watch Varonis’s sales to larger organizations. Strength there would suggest enterprises are still willing to pay for tools that let them see and control data-security risks, a supportive demand backdrop for Commvault’s data-protection and recovery sales to large customers. Weakness could point to caution or longer buying decisions, but Varonis sells visibility and control tools, so its results do not establish that demand for Commvault’s backup products has moved the same way.
Rubrik, Inc. earningsRBRK
Rubrik’s report will show how enterprise demand is changing for subscriptions that protect data and restore it after ransomware attacks, a market where it competes directly with Commvault.
Watch subscriptions for Rubrik Security Cloud’s Business and Enterprise editions, which add ransomware monitoring and cyber recovery. Strong growth would show enterprises are still paying to protect data and recover after attacks, supporting demand in the market where Commvault competes. Slower growth could point to more cautious buyers or tougher competition, but Rubrik’s results alone cannot establish how Commvault’s own sales are changing.
