Company

Company overview

SS&C Technologies Inc handles accounting, recordkeeping and transaction processing for investment funds, asset managers and other financial institutions. SS&C GlobeOp keeps fund accounts and administers alternative investment funds, while Global Investor and Distribution Solutions maintains investor records and services fund investors. SS&C Health also processes medical and pharmacy claims and manages related workflows for health plans and healthcare providers.

Most revenue comes from services delivered using SS&C’s software and from cloud applications it hosts, rather than standalone software sales. Clients generally pay monthly or quarterly under multiyear service contracts that renew automatically unless terminated. SS&C also earns license and maintenance fees from clients that run its software themselves.

Revenue depends on retaining clients and the scale of their business: service fees can vary with assets managed, accounts serviced, transactions and healthcare claims processed. Most revenue comes from U.S. clients, but no single customer supplies a large share. Financial-services and healthcare rules constrain its activities, and privacy laws govern how it handles sensitive information; European rules also restrict transfers of personal data outside the region unless specified safeguards or approvals apply.

SS&C’s results hinge on investment assets and outsourced fund operations, where key rivals to watch beyond this list are BNY Mellon and privately held Citco.

  • SEI Investments Co competes with SS&C for investment managers’ administration and outsourcing work, and for private banks’ and wealth managers’ technology spending. Its Investment Managers and Private Banks results offer a closer view of that competition than its asset-management fees do.

  • State Street competes with SS&C for institutional investors’ fund accounting and administration, outsourced investment operations and portfolio-management technology. Watch its Investment Servicing business, including State Street Alpha, for developments in these competing services.

  • Broadridge competes with SS&C for asset managers’ and broker-dealers’ spending on outsourced operations, reporting and transaction-processing technology. Its Global Technology and Operations business is the relevant line to watch, rather than its larger Investor Communication Solutions business.

  • Northern Trust competes with SS&C to handle fund administration and run investment operations for investment managers. Its Asset Servicing business is the place to watch for fund-administration and outsourcing developments, distinct from its Wealth Management business.

  • Cognizant competes for the health-plan business served by SS&C Health: its TriZetto software and healthcare process services overlap with SS&C’s platforms and outsourcing for handling medical and pharmacy claims.

  • ExlService Holdings, Inc. competes with SS&C for health insurers’ spending on technology-enabled operations, claims-related services and analytics.

  • UiPath competes directly with SS&C Blue Prism to sell companies software that automates tasks and coordinates AI-driven work under enterprise controls. Watch customers’ expansion into more complex workflows and more departments, where UiPath’s platform competes for broader automation spending.

  • Appian Corporation competes with SS&C Blue Prism to automate enterprise work, including regulated financial-services workflows, with software that connects data, systems and tasks. Its financial-services customer developments are more relevant to this overlap than subscriptions across all its industries.
