Northern Trust helps institutional investors such as pension funds, fund managers and insurers hold and administer their investments. Its larger business, Asset Servicing, provides custody, fund administration and investment management: clients pay it to safeguard assets, maintain investment records and run investment operations. Wealth Management serves wealthy individuals, families and privately held businesses with investment management, trusts and private banking. Its Global Family Office also handles family offices’ investment and financial reporting needs.
Trust, investment management and servicing fees generate most of its revenue. Those fees depend mainly on the value of client assets and the volume of transactions and services, so market movements and clients adding or withdrawing assets affect income. Its banking business also earns the difference between interest received on securities, loans and other earning assets and interest paid on deposits and borrowing. That income depends on funding costs and asset yields.
The parent company relies heavily on dividends from its principal bank subsidiary, The Northern Trust Company, to meet its obligations and pay shareholder dividends. Legal limits restrict transfers from the bank to the parent, and some dividends require regulatory approval.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
BNY and Northern Trust compete to safeguard institutional clients’ assets and handle securities servicing, while also managing investments and wealth. BNY’s assets under custody or administration and assets under management are useful gauges of the client asset base behind these businesses.
State Street competes with Northern Trust for institutional clients paying to safeguard assets, administer funds, manage investments and lend securities. Its investment-servicing business is the closest place to watch competition for fund managers’ and retirement plans’ business.
SEI Investments Co competes with Northern Trust to run investment managers’ operations, hold client assets through trust-based custody and manage investments. Watch SEI’s technology and operations outsourcing revenue, which supplied approximately 57% of its revenue in 2025.
SS&C Technologies Inc competes with Northern Trust to handle hedge funds’ and private-market funds’ administration and investment operations. Watch its outsourcing business for these funds, where clients pay for services delivered through SS&C’s own software.
UBS competes with Northern Trust for wealthy families paying for wealth management and family-office services. Its relationships with these families, rather than its group-wide profit alone, are the relevant overlap for Northern Trust.
Morgan Stanley competes with Northern Trust to advise individuals and manage money for individuals and institutions. Its Wealth Management and Investment Management results are the relevant businesses to watch, rather than its institutional securities business.
AlTi Global, Inc. competes with Northern Trust to manage wealthy families’ investments, act as trustee and provide family-office services. Watch its recurring management, advisory, trustee and administration fees, which are its primary revenue source and are supported by wealth-client retention.
Bank of America’s large wealth business competes with Northern Trust for clients paying for investment management, banking and trust services. Watch its Global Wealth & Investment Management client balances, rather than the scale of its consumer banking network.
Goldman Sachs competes with Northern Trust to manage client assets and serve wealthy families’ investment and private-banking needs. Its Asset & Wealth Management fees and private-banking and lending revenue are the lines most relevant to that competition.
Raymond James competes with Northern Trust for individual clients paying for investment management, trust services and private-client banking. Its retail investment-management and trust business is the relevant overlap, not its merger advisory or underwriting work.
Ameriprise and Northern Trust compete to advise clients and manage their accounts, with asset-based fees tying both to client portfolio values. Watch Ameriprise’s managed-account assets and fees; Northern Trust’s wealth fees use asset values with a one-month or one-quarter lag.
Stifel Financial Corp. competes with Northern Trust for private clients paying for investment management, securities brokerage and financial planning. Its Global Wealth Management business is the relevant comparison, rather than institutional trading or investment banking.
Northern Trust Corp earningsThis company
Northern Trust earns fees from institutional custody and wealth services as well as interest income, and this report will show whether both client businesses can sustain their profits.
Read Asset Servicing and Wealth Management fee income alongside each segment's profit, then check net interest margin—the annualized net interest income earned per dollar of average interest-earning assets. Growing fees, steady segment profits and a margin that holds would show client assets and activity are adding to earnings alongside interest income; weaker fees or profits, or a narrowing margin, would show client business or funding costs are weighing on them.
UBS Group AG earningsUBS
UBS competes with Northern Trust for wealth-management and family-office clients, and its report will show whether wealthy families are adding assets and business.
Check UBS wealth-management client assets, net inflows and recurring fee income, separating market gains from new client money. Assets rising with inflows and stronger fees would show wealthy families are adding business at UBS, intensifying competition for these relationships; weaker inflows and fees would point to cooling demand, not proof that Northern Trust is winning clients.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For Northern Trust, the Fed’s policy rate—the rate that guides borrowing costs across the economy—affects interest earned on assets versus interest paid on deposits and other funding, shaping net interest income and margin.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates can lift interest earned on assets that reprice and support net interest income and margin, but higher funding costs may offset some of that benefit.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates can reduce interest earned on assets and compress net interest margin, though lower funding costs may partly cushion the effect.
State Street Corporation earningsSTT
State Street competes with Northern Trust for institutional clients, and its report will show how demand for custody and fund services is translating into fees.
Read State Street's investment-servicing fees alongside changes in client assets, and separate market gains from net client inflows where disclosed. Rising fees with inflows show institutions are adding business at a direct competitor; falling fees or outflows point to weaker demand for institutional services, but do not mean Northern Trust automatically benefits.
