Most of Broadridge Financial Solutions’ revenue comes from Investor Communication Solutions, which handles shareholder voting and investor and customer communications. Banks and brokers holding shares for customers hire it to distribute proxy materials and collect voting instructions. Broadridge coordinates this work with companies and funds, bills public companies for proxy services, and passes part of the collected fees to the banks and brokers. Securities-industry self-regulatory rules set the applicable reimbursement rates. It also sells print and digital communications services through Communications Cloud to financial firms and other service businesses; physical mailing contributes substantial revenue.
Its smaller Global Technology and Operations business sells technology and outsourced operations to securities firms, wealth managers and investment managers. Clients pay Broadridge to support the steps from entering a trade to completing settlement and maintaining records, rather than handling all those functions themselves.
The business depends on the banks and brokers that entrust it with shareholder communications, and on securities-market activity. A significant share of revenue comes from transaction-processing fees tied to investor holdings and trading volumes; special shareholder meetings and corporate transactions generate additional work. Despite serving many types of clients, Broadridge receives a large share of its revenue from a small number of financial-services clients.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Broadridge’s larger investor-communications business hinges on shareholder positions, disclosure requirements and corporate events; Computershare, absent from this list, is an important rival in issuer and transfer-agency services.
SS&C Technologies Inc competes with Broadridge for investment firms’ spending on securities accounting, investment operations and reporting, supplying software and running these functions for clients. Its software-enabled outsourcing business is the part to watch for competition with Broadridge’s investment-operations services.
FIS competes with Broadridge to supply financial institutions with capital-markets software and to process operations on their behalf. Watch FIS’s Capital Market Solutions recurring revenue from long-standing clients, rather than its banking business, for the closest overlap with Broadridge.
Nasdaq competes with Broadridge through Calypso and regulatory technology, selling systems that help capital-markets firms process trades, manage risk and meet compliance requirements.
FactSet competes with Broadridge for investment firms’ spending on portfolio analytics, data management, risk and reporting tools. Its subscriptions for portfolio analytics and enterprise data solutions are the closest window into this overlap, rather than its broader data offering.
Morningstar competes with Broadridge to sell investment professionals data, analytics and wealth or retirement tools. Morningstar Wealth and Morningstar Retirement are the businesses to watch for overlap with Broadridge’s tools for advisors and retirement-service providers.
XBP Global Holdings, Inc. competes with Broadridge to run technology-enabled workflows for regulated financial-services clients. Its Applied Workflow Automation business, which combines automated processing with people handling exceptions, is the relevant business to watch.
Broadridge depends on Kyndryl’s IT services and private-cloud infrastructure to support the financial platforms it operates for clients. Broadridge’s payment commitments under those agreements make Kyndryl a supplier to watch, not a rival for its processing customers.
SS&C Technologies Inc earningsSSNC
SS&C’s report will show whether investment firms are spending on securities accounting and operations outsourcing, work it competes for with Broadridge.
Watch SS&C’s software-enabled outsourcing business. If it grows, investment firms are still buying securities operations services, supporting demand in work Broadridge also provides; if it weakens, client spending on those services is under pressure, making that work harder for Broadridge to win or retain.
Morningstar, Inc. earningsMORN
Morningstar’s report will show whether investment professionals are spending on wealth and retirement tools, where it competes with Broadridge.
Watch Morningstar Wealth and Morningstar Retirement. Strength would suggest investment professionals still want these tools, supporting the market for Broadridge’s offerings to advisers and retirement-service providers; weakness would point to tighter spending by the same kinds of customers and a harder market for Broadridge.
Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc earningsThis company
Broadridge’s investor services bring in most of its revenue, and this report will show whether their growth is being eaten up by the cost of delivering client communications.
Read Investor Communication Solutions (ICS) revenue growth alongside its pre-tax margin. Growth with a steady or rising margin would show that added revenue is covering costs such as communications distribution; growth with a falling margin would show that costs or business mix are eating into the gains, so more revenue is not yet producing stronger profitability.
Fidelity National Information Services, Inc. earningsFIS
FIS’s report will show whether financial institutions keep paying for capital-markets software and operations, a direct overlap with Broadridge’s business.
Watch recurring revenue from FIS Capital Market Solutions—the income from clients continuing to use those services. Growth would show that financial institutions are still paying for capital-markets systems, supporting demand for Broadridge’s overlapping services; weakness would signal pressure on this client spending and a tougher competitive setting for Broadridge.
Factset Research Systems earningsFDS
FactSet’s report will show whether investment firms are subscribing to portfolio analytics and enterprise data tools that overlap with Broadridge’s services.
Watch subscriptions for FactSet’s portfolio analytics and enterprise data solutions. Strength would show that investment firms still pay for these data and analytics tools, supporting the market for Broadridge’s services to investment firms; weakness would signal pressure on related client spending and a harder market for Broadridge to win that work.
