Company overview

Morningstar helps asset managers, financial advisors and investors evaluate investments and build portfolios. Customers pay for access to its data, research and analysis tools: Morningstar Direct supports investment analysis and reporting, while PitchBook covers private markets such as private equity and venture capital. Most revenue comes from subscriptions priced per user or for an entire firm, making continued renewals and the number of licensed users important to the business.

It also earns fees beyond subscriptions. Bond issuers pay Morningstar DBRS to rate new debt, with ongoing monitoring and research bringing recurring revenue. Morningstar Wealth and Morningstar Retirement provide investment management and retirement advice, charging mainly according to the value of assets managed or advised. The retirement business reaches individuals mainly through employer-sponsored plans.

Morningstar does not depend on one dominant customer, but it relies on outside data suppliers, including some feeds with no alternative source. Its asset-based fees depend on asset values, while demand for new credit ratings depends on debt issuance. Privacy rules can restrict how it stores, uses and transfers personal data across borders, and some retirement services require it to take fiduciary responsibility for selecting and monitoring investments.

Morningstar relies mainly on investment-data subscriptions and private-market intelligence, where Bloomberg and LSEG are important rivals missing from this list, while debt issuance drives its credit-rating fees.

  • FactSet competes with Morningstar for financial professionals’ subscriptions to investment data, portfolio analytics and research workstations. Its subscription revenue shows demand for tools that overlap with Morningstar Data and Morningstar Direct.

  • S&P Global competes with Morningstar for investment-data, private-market intelligence and credit-rating business, while more debt issuance benefits both ratings operations. Watch its Ratings business for the issuance activity that also generates fees for Morningstar DBRS.

  • MSCI competes with Morningstar to sell investors and investment managers portfolio analytics, sustainability research, private-asset data and indexes. Its Sustainability and Climate and private-assets businesses are worth watching alongside Morningstar’s Sustainalytics and PitchBook.

  • Moody’s and Morningstar DBRS compete to assess borrowers’ creditworthiness for debt issuers who pay for ratings, but new debt issuance brings fees to both. Moody’s ratings revenue is the line to watch for the issuance conditions affecting Morningstar DBRS.

  • BlackRock challenges Morningstar through Preqin’s private-market data sold to investors and through model portfolios offered to US financial advisors. Preqin’s data offerings are the relevant comparison for PitchBook, while BlackRock’s advisor models compete with Morningstar’s portfolios that earn mainly asset-based fees.

  • Nasdaq competes with Morningstar in selling investment data, indexes and investment workflow tools to institutional customers. Its Capital Access Platforms business—not its trading operations—is the relevant comparison for Morningstar’s data and index licensing.
