Company overview

Appian Corporation provides software that organizations use to build applications for coordinating work among people and systems. Customers use visual design tools to connect existing data, set business rules and automate tasks, with AI and document processing among the available capabilities. Appian also charges for services that help customers build and deploy these applications.

Most revenue comes from platform subscriptions, predominantly the cloud offering, which includes hosting and support. Customers generally pay according to users, application licenses or consumption, and Appian collects subscription payments in advance. It sells directly and through partners that can introduce customers and deliver applications built on Appian. Revenue depends on customers renewing and extending the platform to more users and processes; applications built on it work only on Appian and require an active subscription.

U.S. federal agencies supply a substantial share of revenue, making government funding and procurement important to the business. Serving governments and regulated industries requires Appian to meet contractual, security and regulatory standards; failure to do so can allow customers to terminate contracts. Appian also relies on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for substantially all of its cloud infrastructure, so service availability depends on that provider.

Appian’s results hinge on enterprise and government demand for process automation and winning application-development projects against rivals including privately held OutSystems and Mendix.

  • Pegasystems competes with Appian to sell workflow automation and application-development software to large businesses and government agencies, while their trade-secret lawsuit also directly links their finances. Watch the retrial after the original judgment was reversed: Appian includes neither potential payments from Pegasystems nor insurance proceeds in its financial statements or operating plans.

  • UiPath competes with Appian for organizations paying to replace manual work with software that coordinates processes, handles documents and automates tasks. Watch UiPath’s expansion into more complex workflows and additional departments, where its platform overlaps with Appian’s offering.

  • ServiceNow competes with Appian for enterprise spending on tools that build applications and automate workflows with little coding. Its Creator and Other products are the closest overlap; developments there say more about this rivalry than ServiceNow’s consolidated earnings.

  • Microsoft competes for the enterprise application-building and process-automation work Appian sells through its platform: Power Apps and Power Automate give customers competing low-code development and automation tools.

  • Salesforce competes with Appian for enterprise application-development projects, selling subscriptions to customer-management software alongside low-code application and workflow tools. Watch how its Agentforce 360 Platform connects applications and data into workflows, the part of its offering that overlaps with Appian.

  • SS&C Technologies Inc competes with Appian to sell enterprise automation with built-in controls, including workflows for regulated financial-services and healthcare customers. Watch its automation offering’s integration, security and demonstrated return on investment—the factors SS&C identifies as deciding this competition.

  • SAP competes with Appian through SAP Build, which lets business customers develop applications with little coding and automate processes, but this is only part of SAP’s broader software and cloud business. Watch SAP Build and the development and integration tools in SAP BTP rather than treating all SAP cloud revenue as a measure of this rivalry.

  • IBM competes with Appian for large enterprises buying software to manage business processes, handle cases and automate document work; its business automation software is the relevant overlap.

  • Palantir competes with Appian to sell businesses and government agencies platforms connecting data, AI and day-to-day workflows. Watch Foundry and AIP adoption in those customer groups, but distinguish Palantir’s government business from Appian’s specifically U.S. federal exposure, which supplied 25.3% of Appian’s total revenue in 2025.

  • Appian depends on Amazon’s AWS to host substantially all the infrastructure for its cloud platform, so AWS reliability and security directly affect service to Appian’s paying customers. Watch outages or security incidents: cloud subscriptions supplied 75.9% of Appian’s subscription revenue in 2025, and downtime can trigger customer credits.
