Company

Company overview

Peoples Financial Services Corp. is a Pennsylvania bank holding company whose banking subsidiary, Peoples Security Bank and Trust Company, serves businesses, households and public and nonprofit organizations. It gathers deposits mainly from communities around its branches and uses them to fund lending. Borrowers pay interest on those loans, its largest revenue source; securities investments also earn interest. The company pays interest on deposits and borrowings and collects additional fees for payments, deposit accounts, and trust and wealth management services.

Commercial real estate accounts for most of its loan portfolio. Most lending stays within its market area in Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey and New York, although 1st Equipment Finance also provides business equipment loans and leases outside that area. Earnings depend on borrowers repaying, local property and business conditions, and the gap between interest earned and funding costs. Retaining local deposits is central to that funding model; the company does not depend on a single customer or a small group of customers.

Banking rules limit activities and require capital to be maintained. The holding company also relies on payments from the bank to meet its own obligations and fund shareholder dividends, and laws and regulators can restrict those transfers.
