Company

Company overview

Univest Financial Corporation is a bank holding company operating through Univest Bank and Trust Co. and other subsidiaries. It serves individuals, businesses, municipalities and nonprofits in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. Deposits and loans are concentrated in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery, Bucks, Lancaster and Philadelphia counties.

Customer deposits provide its main funding source. The bank lends money and holds investment securities, earning interest from borrowers and securities issuers while paying interest on deposits and borrowings. This difference supplies most of the group’s revenue. Most lending is to businesses, commercial real estate and construction, so repayment depends heavily on business cash flows and property activity. Retaining deposits and managing how quickly funding costs and asset yields change with interest rates are central to the business.

The group also earns fees for managing and advising on client assets through its Girard businesses, and commissions from selling insurance through Univest Insurance. Wealth-management fees generally depend on the value of assets managed; insurance commissions generally depend on policy premiums.

The parent company relies mainly on subsidiary dividends for its own revenue. Banking capital requirements and other legal and regulatory restrictions limit how much cash the bank can pass up to it.

  • Citizens Financial Services, Inc.’s First Citizens Community Bank competes with Univest for loan, deposit and trust customers in Lancaster, Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties—Univest’s main concentration of loans and deposits. Watch its business lending and trust services in those counties for signs of competition in Univest’s core market.

  • Princeton Bancorp, Inc.’s The Bank of Princeton competes with Univest for personal and business loans and deposits in Philadelphia, Montgomery and Bucks counties and nearby New Jersey. Its pricing on business loans and home mortgages is worth watching: it competes through customer service and relationships while also considering local competitors’ prices.

  • S&T Bancorp Inc competes with Univest for Pennsylvania consumers and small and medium-sized businesses, offering loans, deposits and wealth-management services. Its emphasis on locally decided, customized banking makes its loan and deposit pricing for these customers useful to watch.

  • First Commonwealth Financial Corporation competes with Univest in Pennsylvania banking for personal and business customers; both also sell wealth-management and insurance services. The overlap extends beyond loans and deposits to managing customers’ money and arranging insurance coverage.

  • Unity Bancorp’s Unity Bank competes with Univest for business loans and deposits in adjoining New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania markets. The relevant overlap is lending to businesses and taking their deposits, rather than Univest’s wider range of financial services.

  • CUSTOMERS BANCORP INC’s Customers Bank competes with Univest for business banking customers in southeastern Pennsylvania. Its substantial national specialty-lending and payments businesses make its overall results a less direct comparison with Univest’s local banking business.

  • Northwest Bancshares, Inc competes with Univest for Pennsylvania personal and business deposits and loans, but operates across more markets and puts greater emphasis on residential lending. Separate its owner-occupied home lending from business lending when using its results to assess competition facing Univest.

  • Atlantic Union Bankshares Corporation competes with Univest for Maryland business and retail banking customers, and both finance equipment purchases and manage customers’ wealth. Its equipment-finance and wealth-management businesses are worth watching alongside loans and deposits for the overlap with Univest.
