Company overview

ImmunityBio, Inc.’s commercial business centers on ANKTIVA, a medicine that activates immune cells. Its U.S. approval covers use with BCG for adults whose bladder cancer has not responded to BCG and includes carcinoma in situ, with or without papillary tumors, without invading the bladder muscle.

U.S. ANKTIVA sales account for nearly all revenue. ImmunityBio supplies clinics and hospitals through specialty distributors and a specialty pharmacy. Government and private insurers’ coverage and reimbursement help fund treatment, so sales depend on physicians prescribing the combination and healthcare providers being able to obtain payment for it.

Because ANKTIVA must be given with BCG for this U.S. indication, BCG availability also limits treatment capacity. Merck’s TICE BCG is the only FDA-approved BCG strain available in the U.S. and remains in short supply. ImmunityBio has arranged an alternative supply with Serum Institute of India, but that product is available only in limited quantities through an expanded-access program, rather than general commercial approval. Other drug candidates remain in development and cannot generate product sales until approved and commercialized.

ImmunityBio’s results hinge on ANKTIVA uptake against rivals including privately held Ferring’s ADSTRILADRIN, and on BCG availability, which its Serum Institute of India partnership seeks to improve.

  • CG Oncology is developing cretostimogene for the BCG-unresponsive bladder-cancer patients ImmunityBio already treats with ANKTIVA plus BCG. Its trial results are worth watching for a potential alternative in that same patient group; cretostimogene remains investigational.

  • enGene Therapeutics is developing detalimogene for the same high-risk, BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer with carcinoma in situ that ImmunityBio treats with ANKTIVA plus BCG. Watch its single-drug treatment’s development progress: enGene plans to sell it independently in the U.S. if approved, but has no reported product sales.

  • Merck both competes with ImmunityBio through KEYTRUDA in BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and supplies TICE BCG, the companion treatment required for ANKTIVA’s U.S. regimen. Watch TICE BCG availability: ImmunityBio says Merck has been the sole U.S. BCG supplier since 2012, with rationing since 2019.

  • Johnson & Johnson’s INLEXZO competes with ImmunityBio’s ANKTIVA for patients with BCG-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer with carcinoma in situ.

  • Protara Therapeutics’ TARA-002 development puts another potential treatment into the non-muscle-invasive bladder-cancer market served by ImmunityBio’s ANKTIVA. Watch its bladder-cancer trial results rather than sales: Protara has generated no revenue since inception.

  • UroGen Pharma and ImmunityBio both depend on uptake of nonsurgical bladder-cancer drugs, but serve different patients: UroGen sells bladder-instilled Zusduri for recurrent low-grade, intermediate-risk disease, while ANKTIVA treats BCG-unresponsive carcinoma in situ. Zusduri uptake offers a view of adoption in urology practices, not a like-for-like measure of ANKTIVA demand.

  • Relmada Therapeutics’ lead candidate NDV-01 is in Phase 2 for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, making its development results relevant to the bladder-preserving treatment market served by ImmunityBio’s ANKTIVA. Watch NDV-01 trial updates, not commercial performance: Relmada has no approved products or revenue.

  • ImmunityBio relies on BeOne Medicines to supply tislelizumab for its confirmatory Phase 3 trial combining that drug with ANKTIVA in advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer resistant to checkpoint-inhibitor therapy. Watch the combination trial’s survival results, rather than BeOne’s blood-cancer drug sales, for evidence about ANKTIVA in this lung-cancer setting.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

The Fed’s decision on its benchmark interest rate matters to ImmunityBio because higher rates can raise interest expense and cash outflows on its $505 million note, which bears interest at Term SOFR plus 8%.
