Company overview

UroGen Pharma Ltd. develops and sells treatments for cancers of the urinary tract, mainly in the United States. Jelmyto supplies most of its product revenue and treats adults with low-grade upper tract urothelial cancer. Its newer medicine, Zusduri, treats adults with recurrent, low-grade, intermediate-risk bladder cancer that has not invaded the bladder muscle.

Both medicines combine mitomycin, a cancer drug, with UroGen’s RTGel hydrogel. Clinicians instill the liquid formulation into the upper urinary tract or bladder; it gels at body temperature and gradually dissolves in urine, releasing the drug over several hours. UroGen sells both medicines through two national specialty distributors, with one accounting for most product sales. Use of the treatments depends on physicians and patients accepting them in place of established surgical procedures and on insurers and government health programs providing adequate coverage and reimbursement.

UroGen may promote each medicine only for its approved patient group; broader uses require additional regulatory approvals. It also relies on outside manufacturers, including Teva as its sole supplier of the mitomycin active ingredient and Isotopia Molecular Imaging as its sole contracted supplier of the hydrogel.

UroGen’s results hinge on doctors choosing Jelmyto and Zusduri over repeated surgery; privately held Ferring Pharmaceuticals is also worth watching for competing bladder-cancer therapies.

  • Tyra Biosciences is developing oral dabogratinib for both low-grade upper urinary tract cancer and intermediate-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, putting it directly alongside UroGen’s marketed Jelmyto and Zusduri. Progress in those two patient groups is the Tyra news most relevant to UroGen’s future competition.

  • CG Oncology’s investigational cretostimogene overlaps the bladder-cancer market and urologists served by UroGen’s Zusduri, though it is being developed for both intermediate- and high-risk non-muscle-invasive disease. Its results in intermediate-risk patients are the clearest read on potential competition for Zusduri.

  • UroGen depends on Teva for the cancer-treating ingredient mitomycin in both Jelmyto and Zusduri, but this sole supplier has also sought approval to sell generic Jelmyto. Watch both supply continuity and that application: generic competition could begin after Jelmyto’s orphan-drug exclusivity expires in April 2027 if UroGen cannot maintain patent protection.

  • ImmunityBio and UroGen both depend on urologists adopting bladder-preserving medicines, but sell to different patient groups: ANKTIVA treats high-risk disease unresponsive to BCG, while Zusduri treats recurrent low-grade intermediate-risk disease. ANKTIVA unit sales offer a signal of adoption in the high-risk group, not a direct measure of Zusduri demand.

  • enGene Therapeutics and UroGen are tied to advances in local treatments that preserve the bladder, rather than serving the same patient group: enGene is developing detalimogene for high-risk disease, while UroGen sells Zusduri for low-grade intermediate-risk disease. Watch detalimogene’s clinical results in high-risk patients whose cancer has not responded to BCG; it remains a development program, not a source of product sales.

  • Relmada Therapeutics could compete with UroGen for urologists’ use of bladder-cancer medicines through NDV-01, its lead candidate for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Watch its Phase 2 results rather than sales: Relmada has no approved or commercial products.

  • Johnson & Johnson’s treatments delivered into the bladder include INLEXZO and investigational TAR-210, with TAR-210 targeting intermediate-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder-cancer patients also served by UroGen’s Zusduri. TAR-210 is the program to watch for competition in that patient group.

  • Aura Biosciences’ bel-sar could compete with UroGen’s bladder-preserving approach through early treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, although Aura’s lead program is in eye cancer. Its bladder-cancer clinical results are more relevant to UroGen than progress in its lead eye-cancer program; bel-sar is not yet an approved product.

  • Protara Therapeutics is developing TARA-002 for the bladder-cancer treatment market served by UroGen, adding potential competition. Its development focus differs from the patient population covered by Zusduri’s approval, so it is not a like-for-like rival.
