Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies pay Evotec SE to carry out research that takes potential medicines from an initial idea toward human trials. Drug discovery and preclinical development account for most of its revenue, with services offered under the Evotec and Cyprotex names. Customers generally pay for agreed work or the research staff assigned to a project, so most revenue comes from performing services rather than selling approved medicines.
Just – Evotec Biologics also develops and manufactures biologic medicines for customers, from antibody design through clinical and commercial supply. It continues to provide these services while shifting toward partnerships and licensing its manufacturing technology. Evotec sold its Toulouse manufacturing operation to Sandoz in December 2025 under an agreement that included upfront technology-license fees and rights to future milestone payments and royalties. Partnered drug programs can also generate payments when they reach agreed development goals or achieve sales, although these success-based payments currently contribute little compared with service fees.
A few large customers supply a substantial share of revenue, with Bristol Myers Squibb and Sandoz particularly important. The business depends on customers continuing to fund research and retain their projects with Evotec; partners can scale back or stop programs. Development and manufacturing work must meet applicable regulatory and quality requirements, and inspections or approval delays can interrupt projects.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Evotec also depends materially on Sandoz, which contributed more than 10% of its 2025 revenue and whose biologics technology partnership supports license fees, development payments and potential biosimilar royalties.
Charles River Laboratories competes with Evotec for drugmakers’ outsourced drug-discovery, preclinical-development and safety-testing work. Its Discovery and Safety Assessment revenue is the closest line to watch for demand in these overlapping services.
Evotec depends heavily on Bristol Myers Squibb’s research purchases: the drugmaker was one of only two customers each contributing more than 10% of Evotec’s 2025 revenue. Watch news on their partnered neurodegenerative-disease drug programs for progress in this major customer relationship.
AbCellera and Evotec both offer pharmaceutical partners antibody discovery in return for research payments and possible later payments when drugs advance or sell. AbCellera’s partner-discovered antibodies reaching clinical trials are a concrete sign of progress in this competing model, while Evotec still earns mainly from research services.
Recursion Pharmaceuticals competes with Evotec for pharmaceutical partners’ discovery work by combining laboratory data, computational models and biology relevant to patients. Watch the drug pipelines Recursion builds for partners—the closest overlap with Evotec’s use of patient molecular data to find drug targets.
OmniAb competes with Evotec to help pharmaceutical partners discover antibodies and drugs targeting ion channels, collecting research fees and potential later payments. Watch partners’ choice between OmniAb’s model, which shares in a drug’s later success, and competitors’ upfront-payment models.
Certara competes with Evotec for life-sciences customers’ drug-development spending, selling software and consulting that help decide how to develop medicines. Its modeling and simulation services, including clinical-trial design and analysis, show where it competes for those budgets rather than duplicating Evotec’s laboratory work.
Schrodinger competes with Evotec for pharmaceutical discovery budgets through computational and data-driven ways to identify and improve medicines. Watch its software revenue from pharmaceutical customers, who pay for molecular calculations, alongside Evotec’s data-driven discovery services.
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Patheon business competes with Evotec to develop and manufacture biologic medicines for biopharmaceutical customers.
Ginkgo Bioworks competes with Evotec for commercial customers’ outsourced biological research and experimental data-generation work. Watch its data-generation services for training and validating AI models, which overlap with Evotec’s combination of large-scale biological data and AI-assisted analysis.
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc. earningsTMO
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s report can show how Patheon’s biologics development and manufacturing business is doing, and whether demand for work it competes for with Evotec’s JEB is holding up.
Look for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s disclosures on Patheon, especially demand for biologics development and manufacturing. Growth in that business would show that drugmakers are still paying for this type of outsourced work, supporting the market JEB serves; weakness would point to tighter demand and contract competition. Patheon’s results do not directly establish JEB’s revenue or market share.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. earningsBMY
Bristol Myers Squibb’s report can show whether its research priorities and relevant partnered programs support continued demand from this major Evotec customer.
Watch for disclosed progress in partnered neurodegenerative-disease programs and any change in Bristol Myers Squibb’s research priorities or spending. Advancing programs and steady research priorities would support continued demand from this major customer, but would not confirm orders or revenue for Evotec; stalled programs or reduced research activity would raise the risk that this customer source weakens.
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. earningsCRL
Charles River Laboratories’ report will show drugmakers’ demand for outsourced discovery and preclinical services, a close match for the market Evotec’s D&PD serves.
Watch revenue in Charles River Laboratories’ Discovery and Safety Assessment business. Growth would show that drugmakers are still buying outsourced discovery and preclinical services, supporting the demand environment for Evotec’s D&PD; weakness could signal tighter customer budgets and tougher project competition. Charles River’s revenue is not a substitute for Evotec’s own booking data.
Evotec SE earningsThis company
Evotec’s report will show whether fee-based research is stabilizing and whether JEB’s growth is adding lasting operating contribution.
Read fee-based research revenue alongside JEB revenue and segment adjusted EBITDA, the company’s measure of segment operating performance. Check how much of JEB revenue comes from licenses rather than ongoing services. Stable research revenue, growing JEB revenue and positive adjusted EBITDA would show both businesses supporting operations; falling research revenue or JEB growth led mainly by license income without stronger operating contribution would leave Evotec’s revenue base less secure.
