OmniAb, Inc. helps drug developers find antibodies to turn into potential therapies. Its genetically engineered animals, including OmniRat, OmniMouse and OmniChicken, produce antibodies with human sequences. OmniAb then screens these antibodies to identify candidates for partners. Partners can use its discovery services or license technologies for use in their own laboratories.
Partners pay for technology access and research work, then make additional payments when resulting drug programs reach agreed development or commercial milestones. If a product reaches the market, OmniAb receives royalties tied to its sales. License and milestone payments, together with research services, currently provide most revenue; royalties are a smaller source.
A small group of partners supplies a substantial share of revenue. Further milestone and royalty income depends on partners advancing candidates, securing regulatory approval and selling therapies—decisions and activities OmniAb does not control. Its animal technology also has a regulatory boundary: the FDA can require approval or an exemption for genetically altered animals. The agency previously advised that OmniChicken did not require either at its early research stage, but that position is conditional and could change.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
AbCellera competes with OmniAb for drug developers paying for antibody discovery, with both also eligible for milestone payments and royalties if partner drugs succeed. AbCellera’s partner molecules entering clinical trials show how its discovery work is progressing toward those later payments.
Twist Bioscience competes with OmniAb for antibody-discovery projects from drug developers, but also sells substantial amounts of synthetic DNA. Its antibody-discovery business is the relevant comparison for OmniAb, rather than total revenue spanning healthcare, chemicals and materials, academic research, and food and agriculture.
Absci offers pharmaceutical partners an alternative to OmniAb’s animal-based antibody discovery: it designs antibodies with AI and tests them in the lab. Watch whether its internally developed candidates secure partnerships or licensing deals, the route it pursues to support selected programs and platform development.
Evotec competes with OmniAb for pharmaceutical developers’ paid drug-discovery work, including finding drugs that act on ion channels. Its Discovery & Preclinical Development service revenue is the closer comparison for OmniAb’s discovery business, rather than its separately reported biologics manufacturing business.
Charles River Laboratories competes with OmniAb for biopharmaceutical companies’ outsourced drug-discovery work, including ion-channel discovery. Its Discovery and Safety Assessment revenue is the closer comparison, though it also includes safety testing beyond the discovery work that overlaps with OmniAb.
Ligand and OmniAb both depend on partners developing and selling medicines: they license technology and receive a share of drug sales as royalties. Ligand’s Captisol and NITRICIL royalty streams offer a comparison for the longer-term revenue OmniAb hopes to earn if partner drugs gain approval and sell.
ALX Oncology’s progress on products developed under patents assigned through OmniAb subsidiary Crystal Bioscience can trigger clinical and regulatory milestone payments of up to $11.1 million in aggregate, with each milestone payable only once across all products. ALX recorded a $0.3 million first milestone payment in 2022 and none in 2023–2025, making qualifying development milestones—not drug sales—the news to watch for this agreement.
OmniAb, Inc. earningsThis company
OmniAb earns license, milestone and research-service fees from partners, with royalties possible only if their drugs reach the market; this report will show whether those fees are recovering or royalties are beginning to take over.
Read license and milestone revenue, service revenue and royalties together. A recovery in the first two would show more partner licensing, research work or payment milestones; rising royalties would show partner product sales contributing more. If license and milestone revenue and services remain weak while royalties stay small, OmniAb still lacks a meaningful commercial-product base, leaving revenue exposed to the timing of partner programs.
Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. earningsLGND
Ligand’s Captisol and NITRICIL royalties show how partner product sales can produce income for a licensing business, a longer-term revenue path OmniAb hopes to build.
Look at whether Ligand’s Captisol and NITRICIL royalties grow and which products account for the change. Rising royalties show how partner product sales can bring more income to a technology licensor, the kind of revenue path OmniAb hopes to develop; falling or limited royalties show how much that income depends on individual products’ sales. The companies’ products and businesses differ, so this comparison is about the revenue model, not the size of OmniAb’s royalties.
ALX Oncology Holdings Inc. earningsALXO
ALX Oncology’s report matters because progress on a product covered by its agreement with OmniAb subsidiary Crystal Bioscience could trigger a clinical or regulatory milestone payment.
Look for an explicit disclosure that a product covered by the agreement has reached a clinical or regulatory milestone; a general pipeline update or change in research spending does not establish a payment trigger. If the contractual condition is met, OmniAb could receive a one-time milestone payment. If no qualifying event is disclosed, the report has not shown a new payment, but that alone does not mean the program has stopped.
AbCellera Biologics Inc. earningsABCL
AbCellera’s report will show whether partner antibody candidates are entering clinical trials, indicating whether a competing discovery platform is advancing work toward the milestones and royalties OmniAb also seeks.
Look at how many partner molecules enter clinical trials and whether that progress continues. More entries show that some AbCellera partner programs have advanced closer to later development payments and potential royalties, and that drug developers have another antibody-discovery option. Fewer entries mean less evidence of that progress, not that OmniAb has won those projects. The report speaks to the competitor’s program progress, not a direct shift in revenue between the two companies.
