Charles River Laboratories helps clients investigate potential medicines and assess their safety before human trials. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies pay it to conduct research and testing they choose not to do in-house, including safety studies required by regulators. These discovery and safety-assessment services generate most of its revenue. It also serves academic institutions, government agencies and other industries, without relying on a single client for a large share of sales.
The company breeds and sells research animals and manages animal colonies for clients. It also supports biopharmaceutical production: its Endosafe products test for bacterial endotoxins, while other products and services detect and identify microbes. Alongside this quality-control work, it tests biologic medicines and develops and manufactures them under contract.
Demand depends on clients’ research budgets, biotechnology funding and willingness to outsource work. Animal-based studies also depend on access to research animals, including non-human primates from limited international sources whose movement is subject to import, export and transport restrictions. Research and manufacturing must meet applicable regulatory standards; noncompliance can invalidate study data or halt operations. Validated alternatives to animal testing and changes in regulatory testing requirements can also change the work clients buy.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Charles River’s results hinge on biopharmaceutical research budgets and demand for outsourced preclinical studies; WuXi AppTec is an important rival to watch beyond this list.
Evotec competes with Charles River for drug developers’ outsourced discovery and preclinical work, including testing how drugs behave in the body and their toxicity. Its Discovery & Preclinical Development service revenue is the line to watch for this rivalry.
Medpace and Charles River both depend on small and mid-sized biotechnology companies’ funding: those clients pay Medpace to run clinical development programs and Charles River for earlier preclinical studies. Watch Medpace’s business with this customer group for signs of their capacity to fund drug development.
ICON shares Charles River’s exposure to drug-development budgets: pharmaceutical and biotechnology sponsors pay ICON to run clinical trials and Charles River for earlier non-clinical work. Demand for ICON’s outsourced trials offers a view of those sponsors’ development spending, rather than a direct read on preclinical study volumes.
IQVIA and Charles River serve drug developers at different stages: IQVIA conducts clinical research, while Charles River handles earlier drug discovery and safety testing, linking both to development spending and research outsourcing.
Thermo Fisher shares Charles River’s exposure to biopharmaceutical spending through laboratory supplies and pharmaceutical services, and competes for manufacturers’ microbial quality-control testing purchases. Its microbial testing business is the relevant overlap to watch, rather than its broad company-wide sales.
Fortrea and Charles River draw on the same pharmaceutical and biotechnology development budgets, with clients paying Fortrea to manage clinical trials and Charles River for non-clinical studies. Leading pharmaceutical customers supplied 56% of Fortrea’s fiscal 2025 revenue, making their spending an especially useful signal to watch.
Danaher serves the same research and biologics-production activity that creates demand for Charles River: customers buy its life-science and bioprocessing products and services, while paying Charles River for discovery work and manufacturing testing.
OmniAb competes with Charles River for drug developers seeking ion-channel discovery technology and biological expertise. Its technology-access payments and research-service fees are closer to this competitive overlap than royalties from any partner products that reach the market.
Rapid Micro Biosystems competes with Charles River for pharmaceutical manufacturers’ microbial quality-control spending through its Growth Direct testing platform. Watch system sales alongside recurring consumables and service revenue, which follow once customers install and validate a system.
Medpace Holdings, Inc. earningsMEDP
Medpace’s report will show whether small and midsize biotech companies are funding clinical development, a signal for demand for Charles River’s earlier-stage research.
Watch whether Medpace’s business with small and midsize biotech clients grows or weakens. Growth would indicate that these companies can keep clinical programs moving, which may support earlier research at Charles River; weakness would suggest funding constraints are still limiting drug development and could weigh on Charles River’s early-stage work.
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. earningsThis company
Charles River’s report will show whether drug-development demand is spreading beyond microbial quality-control testing into earlier research and biologics testing.
Read Discovery and Safety Assessment (DSA) revenue alongside the Manufacturing segment’s microbial and biologics businesses. A DSA recovery with steadier biologics-testing demand would show drugmakers increasing not just quality-control testing but also earlier research and biologics work. If DSA remains weak and biologics sample volumes stay low, growth in microbial testing would mean the improvement is still concentrated in quality control.
Rapid Micro Biosystems, Inc. earningsRPID
Rapid Micro Biosystems’ system sales and follow-on consumables and service revenue will show whether manufacturers are adopting more microbial-testing systems and how competition for Charles River’s quality-control business is evolving.
Read Growth Direct system sales alongside recurring consumables and service revenue. If both rise, new adoption is growing and installed systems are being used, pointing to strong microbial quality-control demand and greater competition for Charles River. If system sales weaken but recurring revenue holds, new adoption is slowing while existing customers continue using their systems. If both weaken, overall spending may be cooling; that alone would not show that Rapid Micro Biosystems is taking business from Charles River.
