IQVIA’s largest business runs clinical research for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Clients hire it to design studies, recruit patients and trial sites, monitor trials, and analyze laboratory and patient data. Most research contracts charge for services performed or set a fixed fee for the agreed work.
Healthcare information, software and analytics provide the other major revenue stream. IQVIA combines data from outside suppliers with its own technology and expertise to help clients understand prescribing, treatment and market activity. Clients pay for information offerings such as MIDAS, cloud software and related analytical services. A smaller business supplies outsourced sales and medical teams and patient-support services.
Life sciences companies supply most revenue. Several large clients collectively account for much of the business, rather than one dominant customer. Revenue depends on clients’ research and commercial spending, their willingness to continue trials, and IQVIA’s ability to recruit suitable patients and investigators. Its information services also depend on continued access to suppliers’ data. Privacy laws restrict how health data can be collected, used and transferred across borders, while clinical trials must meet regulatory, ethical and patient-consent requirements.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
IQVIA depends on biopharmaceutical spending on clinical development and commercialization; privately held Parexel and Syneos Health are also important clinical-research rivals to watch.
Icon Plc competes with IQVIA for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies' outsourced global trials, laboratory services, consulting and commercialization work. Its large global clinical-development programs are the business to watch for competition with IQVIA.
Veeva Systems competes with IQVIA for life sciences companies' spending on clinical and commercial software, healthcare data and consulting. Watch its Commercial Solutions revenue, which includes commercial cloud software and data products.
Medpace Holdings, Inc. competes with IQVIA to run Phase I–IV clinical development for biopharmaceutical customers, with a particular focus on small and mid-sized sponsors. Its work for those smaller customers is the clearest area to watch for this rivalry.
Thermo Fisher Scientific competes with IQVIA through PPD, which manages large clinical-development programs for biopharmaceutical companies. Watch PPD's clinical-research business rather than Thermo Fisher's broader instrument and laboratory-product sales.
Fortrea Holdings Inc. competes with IQVIA for drug and medical-device customers' Phase I–IV trial management, studies using real-world treatment evidence and development consulting. Its Clinical Services revenue covers these overlapping businesses.
Charles River Laboratories and IQVIA both depend on biopharmaceutical customers' research budgets and drug pipelines: Charles River handles outsourced discovery and preclinical safety work, while IQVIA manages clinical development. Watch Charles River's Discovery and Safety Assessment business for spending on those earlier stages.
Tempus AI competes with IQVIA to sell life sciences companies patient data stripped of identifying details, analytics and clinical-trial support. Its Insights and Lens data offerings and Trials support are the products to watch for this overlap, rather than its diagnostic tests.
Definitive Healthcare Corp. competes with IQVIA to supply healthcare data and analytics that biopharmaceutical and medical-device companies use to plan commercialization and carry out sales. Watch subscriptions from those life sciences customers; subscription fees generate substantially all of Definitive Healthcare's revenue.
Clarivate competes with IQVIA in healthcare information and analytics through its Life Sciences & Healthcare business, selling customers access to data and insights through subscriptions. That business, rather than its academic or intellectual-property offerings, is the relevant one to watch.
Labcorp competes with IQVIA to provide laboratory testing for clinical-trial customers through its central laboratory business. Watch that business within BLS, not its broader diagnostic testing business, which generated 78% of Labcorp's 2025 revenue.
IQVIA Holdings Inc. earningsThis company
Clinical research is IQVIA’s largest business segment, and this report will show whether signed trial work is becoming revenue without eroding segment profit.
Read clinical-research backlog alongside Research & Development Solutions revenue and segment profit. Backlog is signed work not yet performed, not guaranteed revenue. If revenue and profit rise as work converts, IQVIA is turning contracted trials into profitable delivery. If backlog grows but revenue or profit does not keep pace, delays, cancellations, or higher delivery costs may be absorbing the added work. The question is whether IQVIA can deliver its contracted clinical projects profitably.
Icon Plc earningsICLR
ICON’s large global clinical-trial business competes directly with IQVIA’s clinical research, so its report will show the strength of demand for outsourced trials.
Read new clinical-research work alongside revenue from that business. More new work with rising revenue would show that sponsors are still placing large trials with outside providers, supporting demand in the market IQVIA serves. Weakness in both would point to a tougher market. ICON’s results cannot show whether IQVIA won or lost a particular study; they show whether the market for large outsourced trials is strengthening or weakening.
Labcorp Holdings Inc. earningsLH
Labcorp’s central laboratory business tests samples for clinical trials, so its report offers a read on demand for outsourced lab work that IQVIA also performs.
Look for activity in Labcorp’s central-laboratory business alongside Biopharma Laboratory Services revenue and profit. Stronger lab demand with segment growth would show sponsors are still buying clinical-trial testing, supporting demand for IQVIA’s related work. Weaker lab demand, or falling segment revenue and profit, would point to more pressure in this service market. The segment includes other work too, so the conclusion is about demand for trial-lab services, not IQVIA’s share of projects.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision on its benchmark interest rate matters to IQVIA because higher rates can raise interest paid on its unhedged variable-rate debt, while lower rates can reduce that cost.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
Higher-than-expected rates can increase interest costs on IQVIA’s unhedged variable-rate debt, leaving less of its cash flow for operations and other obligations.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower-than-expected rates can reduce interest costs on IQVIA’s unhedged variable-rate debt, leaving more of its cash flow available for operations and other obligations.
Clarivate Plc earningsCLVT
Clarivate sells data and analytics through its Life Sciences & Healthcare business, competing for some of the same customer spending as IQVIA’s information services.
Read revenue and subscription growth in Clarivate’s Life Sciences & Healthcare business. If both keep growing, life-sciences customers are still paying for data and analytics, supporting the customer budgets IQVIA’s information business also seeks. Slower growth or a decline would point to tighter spending or more pricing pressure. Clarivate’s results do not show whether IQVIA lost customers; they show whether demand for paid information services is holding up.
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. earningsCRL
Charles River handles drug discovery and preclinical safety work before clinical trials begin, offering an upstream read on the research budgets and pipelines that feed IQVIA’s business.
Read revenue and profit in Charles River’s Discovery and Safety Assessment business. Strength would show that drugmakers are still spending on early research and preclinical safety work, potentially supporting the pool of programs that may later enter clinical trials. Weakness could point to tighter research budgets or fewer projects and put that future flow under pressure. Early-stage work does not automatically become an IQVIA contract, so treat this as an upstream pipeline signal, not proof of current trial demand.
Veeva Systems Inc. earningsVEEV
Veeva sells commercial software and data to life-sciences companies, competing with IQVIA for spending on technology and analytics.
Read Veeva Commercial Solutions revenue growth alongside subscription growth. If both rise, life-sciences companies are still buying commercial software and data, supporting the budgets IQVIA’s related business competes for. Slower subscription growth or weaker revenue would point to reduced software spending or stronger competition. Veeva’s figures do not prove IQVIA lost a contract; they show the direction of customer spending on commercial software and data.
