Clarivate’s largest business serves universities, libraries and government institutions with research, education and library tools such as Web of Science, ProQuest and Ex Libris. It also helps companies and law firms manage and protect patents and trademarks, using data and software such as Derwent Innovation and CompuMark. Its smaller life sciences and healthcare business supplies pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical technology companies with data and analysis, including Cortellis, to support treatment development and delivery.
Customers pay mainly through subscriptions, usually under annual contracts with payment at the start of the term. Clarivate also earns repeat fees for handling patent and trademark renewals across jurisdictions, helping customers keep their rights in force. Individual content purchases, consulting and software implementation provide additional revenue.
The business depends on customers renewing at acceptable prices and on continued access to outside data. Clarivate combines expert-curated information with software and analytical models, but third-party and public sources supply inputs for substantially all its products and services; some feeds come from a single provider. No single customer or customer group dominates the business. Data licenses and privacy rules constrain how it can obtain and use information, while changing AI regulation may limit its AI-enabled offerings.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
RELX challenges Clarivate for academic institutions’ research-information business through Elsevier’s Scopus, and for companies’ and law firms’ patent-research business through LexisNexis intellectual-property analytics.
IQVIA competes with Clarivate for life-sciences companies buying healthcare data, analytics and consulting to develop and commercialize treatments. Watch IQVIA’s market, prescribing and treatment information products for a view of the business where they overlap.
Definitive Healthcare competes with Clarivate to sell pharmaceutical and medical-device companies healthcare intelligence for market planning and commercialization. Its paid data subscriptions from those customers are the business to watch, rather than subscriptions from hospitals or its other customer groups.
Veeva Systems competes with Clarivate for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies buying data, intelligence and consulting for research and commercialization decisions. Watch Veeva Data Cloud within its Commercial Solutions revenue, which also includes commercial software rather than data alone.
Tempus AI competes with Clarivate to license healthcare data and analytics to life-sciences companies for drug development and clinical research, with a stronger focus on molecular and patient-level data. Its Insights and Lens data offerings, rather than its diagnostic tests, are the clearest place to watch that overlap.

IQVIA’s report can show how life-sciences companies are buying market, prescribing and treatment information products, which overlap with Clarivate’s Life Sciences & Healthcare business.
Focus on what IQVIA reports about its market, prescribing and treatment information products, not its diagnostic tests or unrelated services. Steady or rising demand would show that life-sciences customers are still buying intelligence that overlaps with Clarivate’s offerings, though it would not guarantee Clarivate keeps those customers. Weakening demand could signal pressure on the shared market, but would not by itself show that Clarivate is losing customers.

Clarivate relies mainly on subscription and recurring revenue, and this report will show whether renewals and pricing can sustain it as transactional work faces pressure.
Read the annual renewal rate, organic annualized contract value (ACV) and subscription revenue together, then compare them with transactional revenue. ACV annualizes active subscriptions for the next 12 months, assuming contracts due for renewal renew at current prices. Steady renewals, growing ACV and subscription revenue, and a halt in transactional declines would show retention, pricing and demand supporting the business. If ACV growth rests mainly on pricing while renewals weaken or transactional revenue keeps falling, recurring income may not be offsetting pressure elsewhere.
