Company

Company overview

Certara helps biopharmaceutical and biotechnology companies plan drug studies, interpret results and prepare submissions to regulators. Customers use its software to model how drugs behave and inform clinical-trial decisions—a process called biosimulation. Its Simcyp Simulator produces modeling results for use in drug-approval applications. Certara’s scientists help customers apply these tools to specific projects, while its data and regulatory software helps organize study data and prepare submission documents.

Customers pay for scientific and consulting services, installed software licenses and cloud subscriptions. Services bring in more revenue than software, though both are substantial parts of the business. Software-license renewals are an important source of repeat revenue. The customer base is broad, with no single customer supplying a dominant share of revenue.

Demand depends on customers’ research budgets and access to funding, as well as regulators’ acceptance of modeling and simulation. Certain preclinical and clinical work must meet applicable laboratory, clinical-practice and electronic-record requirements; regulators can disqualify work that fails those standards, preventing customers from relying on it in submissions.

Know what’s buried in CERT’s filings before you buy

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

Moat

CERT says it has a moat. Does it hold up?

Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

  • Shared drivers

  • Customer
  • Schrodinger, Inc. competes with Certara for pharmaceutical researchers’ software spending: it sells tools for molecular calculations, while Certara sells drug-development simulation software. Watch Schrodinger’s software revenue from large pharmaceutical customers for a read on this shared spending pool.

  • Evotec SE competes with Certara for biopharmaceutical companies’ outsourced drug-development spending, and explicitly names Certara as a competitor in technology-enabled services. Evotec’s discovery and preclinical services revenue is the relevant line to watch alongside demand for Certara’s simulation-led development advice.

  • IQVIA and Certara draw on the same life-sciences budgets for clinical-process software, evidence analysis and consulting. Watch demand for IQVIA’s clinical software and real-world evidence services rather than its broader healthcare information business when assessing spending relevant to Certara’s data and development support.

  • Revvity, Inc. sells research software to the pharmaceutical buyers Certara also serves; Schrodinger identifies both as enterprise life-sciences software competitors. Its Life Sciences software business is the part to watch for research spending relevant to Certara, rather than its hospital and laboratory diagnostics business.

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific and Certara both depend on drug developers’ spending: Thermo Fisher sells research tools and biopharma services, while Certara sells modeling software and development support. Demand from pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers for Thermo Fisher’s biopharma services is worth watching alongside Certara’s new bookings.
