Viking Therapeutics is a clinical-stage drug developer working on treatments including VK2735 for obesity and VK2809 for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, a disease involving liver fat and inflammation. It is testing injectable and oral versions of VK2735; the injectable version has entered Phase 3 trials, while its other current candidates have not reached that stage.
The company has not generated revenue and funds development by raising capital rather than selling medicines. Future revenue would come from selling drugs after regulatory approval or entering collaboration agreements with other companies. Drug sales would depend on patients paying directly or insurers and other healthcare payors covering treatment. Viking currently has no clinical-development collaborations and lacks the resources to develop and commercialize most candidates independently.
Much of the business depends on technology licensed from Ligand Pharmaceuticals, including rights to VK2809 and several other candidates. Those programs depend on keeping the license in force. Commercial sales also require further trials demonstrating safety and effectiveness and regulatory approval; Viking has not yet completed a pivotal trial supporting approval for any candidate.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Viking Therapeutics’ prospects hinge on obesity and MASH trial results and standing out against rivals, including Roche and Boehringer Ingelheim, which are absent from this list.
Eli Lilly’s marketed Zepbound and investigational oral orforglipron and retatrutide compete with Viking Therapeutics’ injectable and oral VK2735 obesity programs. Watch results from Lilly’s newer candidates for the competition VK2735 would face if approved.
Novo Nordisk’s marketed Wegovy and obesity pipeline set the efficacy, patient-access and pricing benchmarks for Viking Therapeutics’ VK2735. Watch Wegovy and late-stage CagriSema to judge how VK2735 would need to stand out.
Structure Therapeutics develops oral GLP-1 obesity drugs for the same weight-management patients as Viking Therapeutics’ oral VK2735. Its oral small-molecule approach aims to address the cost and convenience limitations of peptide drugs, making those claims worth watching as development advances.
Kailera Therapeutics’ once-weekly injectable ribupatide competes with Viking Therapeutics’ VK2735 for obesity patients, and neither company has yet generated revenue. Kailera expects headline results from its global Phase 3 KaiNETIC program in 2028, offering another comparison for VK2735.
Amgen’s late-stage MariTide obesity program challenges Viking Therapeutics’ VK2735 on weight loss, tolerability and dosing convenience. Amgen already earns revenue selling medicines to healthcare providers and wholesalers; MariTide trial news is the part most relevant to Viking.
Madrigal Pharmaceuticals’ marketed Rezdiffra competes with Viking Therapeutics’ investigational VK2809: both are oral drugs targeting the thyroid hormone receptor beta to treat MASH. Rezdiffra’s $958.4 million in U.S. net product revenue in 2025 provides a concrete commercial reference for the market VK2809 seeks to enter.
Altimmune’s investigational pemvidutide competes with Viking Therapeutics’ VK2809 for MASH patients. Watch its liver and weight-related trial results and tolerability, rather than treating lower MASH spending in 2025 as a retreat: the decline mainly followed completion of IMPACT Phase 2b enrollment early that year.
Viking Therapeutics depends on Ligand Pharmaceuticals’ continued license for VK2809 and several other metabolic drug programs; Ligand owns most of the related intellectual property. Ligand licenses technology to build royalty income, and termination of Viking’s agreement in specified circumstances would put development and commercialization of the covered candidates at risk.
Pfizer’s obesity programs acquired with Metsera compete with Viking Therapeutics’ VK2735 for the weight-management market. Pfizer already earns most of its revenue from selling biopharmaceutical medicines; progress in the acquired obesity programs is what matters most for this rivalry.
Inventiva’s oral lanifibranor and Viking Therapeutics’ VK2809 target the same MASH patients through different mechanisms. Lanifibranor is now Inventiva’s only candidate in development, so its clinical progress is the direct comparison to watch for VK2809.
Sagimet Biosciences’ oral drugs that inhibit fatty acid synthase, or FASN, compete with Viking Therapeutics’ VK2809 for MASH patients. Watch whether its programs deliver their intended oral dosing of no more than twice daily, alongside efficacy and tolerability, to assess the competing treatment profile.
Viking Therapeutics, Inc earningsThis company
Viking Therapeutics has no product revenue, so this report will show how clinical and manufacturing spending is using the cash it needs to advance its drug programs.
Read research and development expense alongside cash used in operations and cash and investments at quarter-end. Higher research spending with reported trial progress and ample cash would suggest the investment is supporting development; faster cash use without corresponding progress would leave less room to keep advancing the programs. Expense and cash-flow timing can differ, so the two figures are not interchangeable.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision on its benchmark interest rate matters to Viking Therapeutics because it can change the interest income the company earns on its cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is higher than expected, Viking may earn more interest as holdings are reinvested or rates on floating-rate holdings adjust upward, increasing income that helps fund its research and clinical trials.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is lower than expected, Viking may earn less interest as holdings are reinvested or floating rates adjust downward, reducing income available to help fund its research and clinical trials.
Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. earningsLGND
Ligand Pharmaceuticals' report shows how its licensing business is doing; rights it holds underpin several Viking Therapeutics programs.
Look at Ligand's licensing income and whether it specifically identifies milestone payments or royalties from Viking's licensed programs. Higher licensing income shows that Ligand's licensing business is generating revenue; only a clear reference to Viking-related payments connects that income to Viking's programs. Lower income does not mean Viking's license will be terminated, and the report cannot establish the status of the license agreement by itself.
Eli Lilly & Co. earningsLLY
Lilly's report will show demand for Zepbound and any disclosed progress in newer candidates, revealing the competitive bar facing Viking Therapeutics' VK2735.
Read Zepbound's reported sales alongside any disclosed progress on Lilly's oral orforglipron and retatrutide. Strong Zepbound demand and rapid progress in newer drugs would show that VK2735 faces both an established rival and more treatment options; weaker demand or slower progress would ease that pressure, but would not mean patients will switch to Viking.
Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. earningsMDGL
Madrigal Pharmaceuticals' report will show how Rezdiffra is selling, offering a commercial reference for Viking Therapeutics' oral VK2809, which targets the same MASH patients.
Watch whether Rezdiffra's U.S. net product revenue rises or falls. Continued growth would show that this approved oral drug is generating more commercial revenue, giving VK2809 a reference point in the MASH market; a decline would point to possible hurdles in market adoption or patient access, but would not establish how VK2809 will perform.
Novo-Nordisk A/S earningsNVO
Novo Nordisk's report will show Wegovy's sales and market reach, giving readers a benchmark for the obesity-treatment market Viking Therapeutics' VK2735 would enter.
Look at Wegovy's reported sales and any disclosed information on patient access or pricing. Growing sales and access would show established demand for obesity treatment, but VK2735 would still need to compete with a proven product; weaker sales or access could signal market or payment hurdles, not prove that Viking can overcome them.
