Company overview

Altimmune is a late clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company whose business centers on pemvidutide, its lead experimental drug. It is developing the drug for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), alcohol use disorder and alcohol-associated liver disease. Pemvidutide acts on glucagon and GLP-1 receptors, targeting liver processes as well as appetite and craving. It has completed Phase 2 development, and Altimmune plans to move into Phase 3.

Altimmune has no approved products; almost all revenue to date has come from past government grants and contracts, rather than drug sales. It funds development through share sales and borrowing and seeks partners for late-stage development and commercialization. Its cash resources are insufficient to fund the trials needed to seek marketing approval and bring its candidates to market. The business therefore depends heavily on pemvidutide's progress and further funding or partnerships. Altimmune cannot sell its candidates as medicines without regulatory approval based on evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Altimmune's prospects hinge on pemvidutide showing distinct clinical benefits in liver disease, including against privately held Boehringer Ingelheim's competing GLP-1/glucagon dual agonist.

  • Madrigal Pharmaceuticals already sells Rezdiffra for MASH, setting a commercial benchmark for the liver-disease market Altimmune hopes to enter with pemvidutide. Watch Rezdiffra's U.S. net product revenue, which reached $958.4 million in 2025, as a measure of sales in that market.

  • Novo Nordisk's approved Wegovy treatment for MASH and investigational liver medicines compete with Altimmune's pemvidutide. Watch Wegovy's use in MASH patients with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis and the clinical progress of Novo Nordisk's liver pipeline, rather than its broader diabetes business.

  • Viking Therapeutics is developing an oral MASH medicine that activates the thyroid hormone receptor beta, competing for the same treatment market as Altimmune's pemvidutide. Its MASH trial progress is the relevant signal; Viking had not generated revenue through the reporting period.

  • Inventiva concentrates on lanifibranor for MASH, the principal liver-disease market Altimmune targets with pemvidutide. Lanifibranor is Inventiva's only drug candidate in development after it stopped unrelated research in June 2025, making that program's clinical progress the news to watch.

  • Sagimet Biosciences is developing denifanstat for the same MASH patients Altimmune aims to treat with pemvidutide. Watch denifanstat's efficacy, safety and tolerability results, which help define what pemvidutide must compete against.

  • Eli Lilly is developing MASH medicines that activate two or three receptors, challenging the efficacy and differentiation of Altimmune's pemvidutide. Watch their liver-disease results against Altimmune's claim that pemvidutide's balanced glucagon and GLP-1 activity distinguishes it.

  • Aligos Therapeutics is developing an oral MASH medicine that activates the thyroid hormone receptor beta, competing with Altimmune's pemvidutide. Its MASH clinical progress matters more for this comparison than its reported revenue, which comes from collaborations and customers paying for research and development services.

  • GSK's investigational treatments for MASH and alcohol-related liver disease overlap with two of Altimmune's pemvidutide programs. Watch its FGF-21 medicines for MASH and GSK4532990 for alcohol-related liver disease, rather than its overall medicine and vaccine sales.

  • Adial Pharmaceuticals focuses on AD04 for alcohol use disorder, competing with Altimmune's pemvidutide program for that condition. Watch AD04's clinical results in the specific genetic subgroups identified by its companion diagnostic; Adial has no approved products for sale.

GSK’s report will show whether its FGF-21 MASH medicines and GSK4532990 for alcohol-related liver disease are advancing in markets where Altimmune is developing pemvidutide.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

For Altimmune, the Fed’s rate decision signals whether borrowing costs may rise or fall; if prime lifts the rate on its term loan, more cash goes to interest and less is available for clinical development.
