Online games generate most of NetEase’s revenue, with in-house titles contributing far more than licensed games. Its own franchises include Fantasy Westward Journey and Identity V; it also operates Blizzard titles such as World of Warcraft in mainland China. Most games are free to play, with players paying for virtual items. Some also charge for play time or premium services. Players access games through NetEase’s own channels and third-party mobile, PC and console platforms, which help collect payments and share in revenue.
The business depends on keeping existing games appealing through updates and bringing out new games that attract paying players. Its five largest games supply a substantial share of total revenue, so continued player engagement in leading titles matters. Licensed games also depend on agreements with their developers and content owners.
Outside games, NetEase Cloud Music earns mainly from music memberships and virtual gifts used in social entertainment. Youdao sells learning services and smart devices and provides online marketing services; these businesses are much smaller than games.
Mainland China is NetEase’s main market. Games released there need government approval, and rules restrict minors’ play time and spending. Foreign-investment restrictions mean NetEase runs its main mainland businesses through contracts with locally owned entities rather than direct ownership. Its access to those businesses’ economic benefits depends on those arrangements remaining enforceable.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
NetEase’s results hinge mainly on Chinese players’ engagement and spending, making Tencent an important gaming rival to watch even though it is absent from this list.
Sohu’s Changyou develops and operates online games that compete with NetEase for Chinese players’ time and spending. Watch Sohu’s online-game revenue, rather than its media advertising business, for a read on that competition.
NetEase depends on Microsoft for permission to operate Minecraft and Microsoft-owned Blizzard games for paying players in China. Microsoft is also a rival through its game studios internationally, so news about those China game licenses matters directly to NetEase.
Bilibili competes with NetEase for Chinese players’ mobile-game purchases and time spent playing. Its mobile-game revenue is the relevant line to watch—not overall video-community growth—and accounted for 21.1% of its revenue in 2025.
Take-Two Interactive Software competes with NetEase for what players spend on mobile, PC and console games and in-game content. Its sales of game titles and virtual items offer a more direct view of that rivalry than its advertising revenue.
Tencent Music’s QQ Music, Kugou and Kuwo compete with NetEase Cloud Music for Chinese users’ subscription payments and social-entertainment spending. Watch its music membership pricing and benefits: both companies earn money from listeners paying for music access.
Sony’s own published games compete for players and game purchases as NetEase expands its PC and console portfolio. Watch Sony’s own game releases and sales, rather than PlayStation hardware sales, for this overlap.
Youdao’s learning services, smart devices and advertising revenue feed into NetEase’s consolidated results, while the subsidiary relies on its parent’s financial support. Watch both customer revenue and borrowing needs: Youdao contributed 5.2% of NetEase’s revenue in 2025 and owed the group RMB878.0 million in short-term loans at year-end.
Microsoft Corp earningsMSFT
Microsoft's gaming results and any update on its China licenses will show readers what is happening with the rights NetEase depends on to operate Minecraft and Blizzard games there.
Separate Microsoft's gaming results from any explicit news about the China licenses for Minecraft and Blizzard games. Strong gaming results would show that the licensor's gaming business has support, but would not prove NetEase's licenses remain in place; a disclosed license disruption would put NetEase's ability to operate these games and sell content to players at risk.
Youdao, Inc. earningsDAO
Youdao's revenue and funding needs will show whether the subsidiary can cover more of its operating needs through its own business and rely less on NetEase.
Read changes in learning-services, smart-device and online-marketing revenue alongside operating cash flow and Youdao's borrowing from NetEase. Revenue growth that brings stronger cash flow and less borrowing would show Youdao becoming more self-supporting; weak revenue or cash generation with continued group support would mean NetEase still has to fund the subsidiary.
Sohu.com Limited earningsSOHU
Online-game revenue at Sohu's Changyou will show how that rival is faring in the contest for Chinese players' time and spending.
Check whether Changyou's online-game revenue rises or falls from the prior period, and compare its direction with NetEase's latest reported game trends. Growth would show this rival drawing more revenue from the time and spending of Chinese players; a decline would indicate weaker momentum at Changyou, but neither result alone proves what will happen to NetEase's game revenue.
Tencent Music Entertainment Group earningsTME
Tencent Music's paid-music business will show whether Chinese listeners are still paying for music memberships in a market that overlaps with NetEase Cloud Music.
Read Tencent Music's music-membership and online-music revenue trends alongside any changes in membership prices and benefits. Growth in both members and revenue would show that listeners are still willing to pay for music access, supporting the market NetEase Cloud Music serves; weaker revenue, or member growth that requires richer offers and benefits, would make subscription growth harder for NetEase Cloud Music.

Games are NetEase's main source of revenue, and this report will show whether its online-game revenue can grow while its games segment holds its gross margin.
Read online-game revenue alongside gross margin for games and related value-added services. Revenue growth with a steady margin would show that NetEase's games are still drawing paid spending while preserving the business's earnings cushion; weaker revenue or a falling margin would point to pressure from player spending, the mix of games, or costs such as distribution.
