Company

Company overview

Tencent Music Entertainment Group connects listeners with music through QQ Music, Kugou Music and Kuwo Music. Users pay for memberships that unlock music, downloads and higher sound quality; advertisers pay to reach the platforms’ audiences. Online music services generate most of the company’s revenue, with subscriptions the largest source.

A smaller business lets users sing karaoke and watch live performances through services including WeSing. Audiences buy virtual gifts to support singers and live-streaming performers, and Tencent Music shares the proceeds with performers and their agencies.

The business depends on keeping listeners engaged and willing to pay, while securing music rights from labels, publishers and other content partners. Royalties are a major service cost, and some licenses require minimum payments even if subscription sales disappoint. Controlling shareholder Tencent also supplies important support in attracting users, distributing content and providing technology infrastructure.

Chinese rules restrict exclusive music licensing, so the company works with rights holders mainly on a non-exclusive basis. Foreign-investment restrictions also mean it runs regulated services through Chinese operating entities controlled by contracts rather than direct ownership. These entities generate substantially all revenue, making the business dependent on those arrangements and the required operating permits.

Tencent Music’s results hinge on turning Chinese listeners into higher-paying subscribers, securing music rights and using Tencent’s Weixin, gaming and video ecosystem to help listeners discover music and promote it.

  • NetEase’s controlled Cloud Music business competes with Tencent Music for paying music listeners and licensed music in China. Watch that business rather than NetEase’s overall results, which are dominated by games.

  • Spotify Technology offers a global comparison for Tencent Music’s subscription business: both charge listeners for music streaming, but serve different geographic markets. Watch Spotify’s Premium subscriber growth when assessing Tencent Music’s ability to turn listeners into paying members.

  • Warner Music Group supplies music rights to Tencent Music and collects royalties, so income for Warner is a catalog cost for Tencent Music. Watch Warner’s licensing deals for what they reveal about the cost of keeping music available to Tencent Music’s listeners.

  • Bilibili’s video community and live broadcasts compete with Tencent Music’s karaoke and live-streaming services for Chinese users’ time and entertainment spending. Its engagement with young Chinese viewers is the relevant comparison for Tencent Music’s social-entertainment business, which earns mainly from users buying virtual gifts.

  • Hello Group and Tencent Music both earn money from Chinese live-streaming and social-entertainment users buying virtual gifts and memberships. Watch Hello Group’s gift and membership revenue as a comparison for spending on these services, rather than Tencent Music’s music subscriptions.
