Company

Company overview

Hello Group lets people meet, chat and watch or host live shows through apps including Momo and Tantan. The apps are free to download and use. Users pay to send virtual gifts during live video, voice chats and text conversations, or subscribe for enhanced features, visibility and matching tools. Virtual gifting supplies most revenue, with dating memberships also contributing; advertising and other services are a small part of the business.

Most revenue comes from Chinese mainland. Overseas, Soulchill connects users through voice chat rooms in the Middle East and North Africa, while dating brands include Happn. Access to Soulchill and certain other overseas apps has been removed from Turkish app stores under a regulatory measure; the company is seeking reinstatement.

The business depends on retaining active users and persuading them to spend. Broadcasters and talent agencies help attract audiences, and Hello Group shares gift revenue with them and other recipients. These payments are its largest cost of providing services.

Chinese mainland rules restrict virtual gifting, minors’ participation and permitted content, and the services require licenses. Foreign-ownership restrictions mean Hello Group runs restricted mainland activities through contracts with locally owned operating companies rather than owning them directly. Its ability to control those operations and receive their economic benefits depends on those contracts remaining enforceable.

Hello Group depends on paying users staying engaged and spending on virtual gifts, making JOYY a livestreaming rival to watch even though it is absent from this list.

  • Scienjoy competes with Hello Group for Chinese livestreaming users and broadcasters; both earn money when users buy virtual gifts to support broadcasters. Scienjoy’s virtual-currency sales show spending in the same market, while its revenue sharing with talent agencies reflects the competition to keep broadcasters.

  • Bilibili competes with Hello Group for Chinese users’ attention and entertainment spending through live broadcasts and paid services, while Hello Group earns from virtual gifts and memberships on its social and dating apps. Bilibili’s paid-service revenue is the line to watch for competition over users’ entertainment budgets, rather than its advertising or games revenue.
