Youdao’s two largest businesses are learning services and online marketing, which contribute similar shares of revenue. Learners pay for digital learning content and courses, including coding and adult education; these account for most learning-services revenue. Youdao Dictionary and other learning tools offer free services and charge subscriptions for extra features, including AI tools. These tools also bring users to its paid learning offerings. A smaller business sells smart devices such as Youdao Dictionary Pens through retailers and distributors.
Advertisers pay Youdao to reach users on its own platforms and third-party internet properties, generally paying when users click promotional links. Through Youdao Ads, the company also runs overseas marketing campaigns, typically for fixed fees. This business depends on advertising budgets and access to third-party traffic.
Youdao relies on its controlling shareholder, NetEase, for cooperation in advertising, user acquisition and technology infrastructure, as well as funding support. A single customer supplies a sizable share of total revenue. Education regulation also shapes what Youdao can sell: it disposed of its former school-subject tutoring business to comply with Chinese rules and no longer offers academic after-school courses to compulsory-education or high-school students. Its remaining tutoring services are subject to licensing and other compliance requirements.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
NetEase, the online-game publisher, pays Youdao for marketing services, so its advertising demand feeds directly into Youdao’s revenue. Higher demand from the NetEase group and overseas markets helped lift Youdao’s marketing revenue 28.5% in 2025; watch the group’s marketing purchases.
TAL Education Group competes with Youdao for Chinese learners paying for online learning, educational content and coding enrichment after both exited compulsory-school academic tutoring in mainland China. TAL’s coding and programming offerings are the closest comparison with Youdao’s coding-focused STEAM courses.
Gaotu competes with Youdao for Chinese learners buying online courses and digital learning content, including college students and adults. Its college and adult courses for exams and English skills offer a comparison for demand in Youdao’s adult-learning business.
New Oriental competes with Youdao for learners in China paying for education through online platforms. Its courses combine online delivery with schools and learning centers, giving learners an alternative to Youdao’s online courses and digital content.
Google competes with Youdao for advertisers paying for ads that prompt clicks and engagement, but also supplies advertising space and optimization tools through their 2025 partnership. That access to Google’s premium ad inventory matters alongside the rivalry for advertising budgets.
Jinxin Technology’s Namibox competes with Youdao for Chinese students paying for digital self-learning content. Namibox’s content subscriptions and memberships, aimed at K–9 students, are the relevant comparison—not its fees from partners that install or distribute its programs.
17 Education’s consumer AI-personalized learning products compete with Youdao’s digital content and AI learning apps, whose users can pay for added features and content. Watch that consumer offering rather than its main business selling classroom teaching and learning tools to schools and regional education authorities.
Sunlands competes with Youdao for adults in China paying for online courses and educational content. Its interest, professional-skills and certification-preparation courses generated 74.2% of net revenue in 2025, making that course mix a useful comparison for Youdao’s adult-learning offerings.
New Oriental Education and Technology Group, Inc. earningsEDU
New Oriental’s report will show whether Chinese learners are still paying for courses in the market where it competes with Youdao for education spending.
Watch the direction of New Oriental’s course revenue, not a direct comparison with Youdao’s revenue. If it strengthens, learners’ willingness to pay has support, a helpful sign for the market for Youdao’s online courses and digital content. If it weakens, learners may be tightening course spending, making it harder for Youdao to win paying users. New Oriental also operates schools and learning centers, so its results are a demand signal, not a substitute for Youdao’s own results.
Alphabet Inc. earningsGOOG
Alphabet’s report will show the health of online-ad demand and the value of Google’s ad inventory to Youdao, both a rival for ad budgets and a partner supplying ad access.
Read Alphabet’s advertising results as a signal of advertiser demand. Strength would suggest ad spending still supports the market for Youdao’s services; weakness could mean tighter budgets and tougher competition for Youdao’s advertiser customers. Google also supplies ad inventory and optimization tools through a partnership, so changes in the value or availability of that access matter too. Alphabet’s results alone do not establish how Youdao’s own ad revenue changed.
TAL Education Group earningsTAL
TAL Education’s report will show whether learners are still paying for online content and coding courses, areas that overlap with Youdao’s digital content and STEAM offerings.
Focus on demand for TAL’s coding and digital-learning offerings, rather than its total revenue alone. Strength would show learners are paying for products comparable to Youdao’s STEAM courses, supporting demand in that market; weakness would point to a harder fight for those paying learners. TAL’s mix differs, so its results are a market signal—Youdao’s own course revenue shows what Youdao sold.
Youdao, Inc. earningsThis company
Youdao’s report will show whether online-marketing growth can keep offsetting declines in tutoring and smart devices without further eroding overall gross margin.
Read revenue and gross margin—the share of sales left after direct costs—across all three segments together. Growing online-marketing revenue with tutoring and device declines easing, and overall gross margin stabilizing, would show growth broadening and the mix firming. If ads grow while tutoring and devices keep shrinking and gross margin falls further, more revenue is resting on the lower-margin ad business, leaving profitability under pressure.
NetEase, inc. earningsNTES
NetEase’s report will show whether its marketing-service purchases from Youdao remain a source of Youdao’s online-marketing revenue.
Look for evidence of NetEase’s marketing purchases or related spending; its game revenue is not Youdao revenue. Steady or stronger purchases would support Youdao’s marketing-services sales, while weaker purchases could leave Youdao needing outside advertisers to make up the difference. NetEase may not disclose purchases separately, so its report provides customer-demand context rather than a confirmed figure for Youdao.
Gaotu Techedu Inc. earningsGOTU
Gaotu’s report will show whether adults are still paying for online courses, a demand signal for Youdao’s adult-learning business.
Watch demand for Gaotu’s adult courses, particularly exam and English-skills offerings, rather than comparing the companies’ total revenue. Strength would indicate adults are still willing to pay for online learning, supporting the market for Youdao’s adult courses; weakness could mean softer willingness to pay and a harder market for Youdao to recruit adult learners. Gaotu’s mix differs, so Youdao’s own adult-learning revenue remains the decisive evidence.
