Gaotu Techedu teaches learners from school age through adulthood through live online courses and learning centers across mainland China. Its courses cover academic subjects outside compulsory education, non-academic learning, and college and adult education, including qualification exams and overseas-study preparation such as IELTS and TOEFL. It also sells books and digital learning tools, but learning services generate almost all revenue.
Students generally pay the full course fee when enrolling and can withdraw with a refund for classes not yet delivered. Revenue depends mainly on paid enrollments and the fees Gaotu can charge. Attracting students depends on course quality, qualified instructors and tutors, and converting interest in its courses into paid enrollment; competing course prices and possible regulatory price limits also affect fees.
Mainland China’s tutoring rules reshaped the business: Gaotu ended compulsory-education academic-subject tutoring at the end of 2021. Its remaining tutoring operations require permits, and the rules for high-school academic tutoring remain uncertain. Foreign-ownership restrictions also mean that Gaotu accesses the operating businesses that generate almost all its revenue through contracts rather than direct equity ownership.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
TAL competes with Gaotu for Chinese families’ spending on online courses and offline tutoring and enrichment. Watch its science, coding and humanities programs for signs of demand in enrichment; neither company offers compulsory-education academic tutoring in mainland China.
New Oriental competes with Gaotu for paying students through learning centers across China and online courses. Watch its classroom courses with online components: that combination shows how it competes for students in different locations, while its East Buy retail business is separate from this education rivalry.
Youdao competes with Gaotu for learners buying online adult and non-academic courses, digital content and learning tools. Its online-learning business—especially coding and adult courses—is the closer comparison for Gaotu’s course demand, rather than Youdao’s advertising business.
Sunlands competes with Gaotu for Chinese adults paying for online professional-certification and further-education preparation courses. Watch its certification-preparation courses, but distinguish them from the broader interest and professional-skills category with which they are reported.
Four Seasons Education competes with Gaotu for Chinese learners’ spending on non-academic enrichment courses. Its science, humanities and coding programs are the relevant comparison; total revenue also includes tourism and content sold to educational institutions, with no revenue split disclosed.
New Oriental Education and Technology Group, Inc. earningsEDU
New Oriental's mix of classroom courses and online teaching will show how much families are paying for learning services across locations, a market where Gaotu also competes for students.
Look at demand for New Oriental's classroom courses and online teaching. Resilient demand would suggest families are still paying for learning services, supporting the market Gaotu serves online and offline; weaker demand would signal more pressure on Gaotu to attract students and sustain fees.
Gaotu Techedu Inc. earningsThis company
Gaotu earns most of its revenue from course fees, and this report will show whether paid-enrollment growth can keep delivery costs from squeezing its margins.
Read paid enrollments and gross margin together. Enrollment-led revenue growth with a steadier margin would show Gaotu is attracting students while keeping course revenue ahead of delivery costs. Slower revenue growth or a falling margin would point to pressure on demand, pricing, or cost control.
