Company

Company overview

Sohu.com Limited’s main business is Changyou, which develops and operates PC and mobile games. Players play for free and pay for virtual items. PC games provide most game revenue, and TLBB PC alone supplies more than half of the group’s revenue. Legacy TLBB Mobile is another important title: Tencent exclusively operates and distributes it in mainland China and pays Changyou a share of revenue. These games depend on continued player spending, appealing updates and licenses to use material from the novel Tian Long Ba Bu.

Sohu also attracts audiences with news, video and other online content through Sohu News, Sohu Video and its web portals. Advertisers pay for placements and related marketing services, mostly through advertising agencies. This smaller business depends on content drawing an audience that advertisers want to reach.

Foreign-ownership restrictions mean Sohu conducts much of its mainland Internet and game business through companies it does not own, relying instead on contracts with those companies and their shareholders. Game launches and certain updates require regulatory approval, while rules limit minors’ playing time and spending. The business therefore depends on both maintaining its contractual arrangements and securing the permissions needed to operate.

Sohu’s results hinge chiefly on Changyou’s TLBB PC franchise; watch Tencent as both a major gaming rival and the exclusive mainland operator of Changyou’s licensed TLBB mobile titles.

  • NetEase competes with Sohu’s Changyou for Chinese players’ time and spending on long-running PC and mobile role-playing games, where Changyou earns money from virtual-item purchases. Watch player loyalty to NetEase’s Westward Journey and Fantasy Westward Journey titles against Sohu’s reliance on TLBB PC, which supplied about 53% of group revenue in 2025.

  • Bilibili competes with Sohu for Chinese gamers’ spending, video viewers and advertisers, earning money from mobile games and ads while Sohu sells game items and advertising placements. Bilibili’s mobile-game and advertising revenue are the lines to watch for competition across both sides of Sohu’s business.

  • Weibo competes with Sohu for Chinese brands’ campaign budgets, with both selling advertising around online content and mobile audiences to advertisers and agencies. Watch Weibo’s advertising and marketing business for competition over the brand campaigns Sohu builds around its content.

  • iQIYI competes with Sohu Video for Chinese subscribers, advertising budgets and viewers of professionally produced content; both collect subscription fees and sell advertising. Watch iQIYI’s membership revenue and changes to package pricing for the competition facing Sohu’s paid video subscriptions.

  • Baidu competes with Sohu for Chinese advertisers’ budgets: Baidu sells search and feed placements, while Sohu sells placements across its news, video and portal services. Baidu charges advertisers per click on sponsored search links, making its online marketing revenue more relevant to Sohu’s advertising business than its overall revenue.

  • Alibaba Group’s Alimama competes with Sohu for Chinese brands’ and merchants’ advertising budgets, selling placements on Alibaba’s platforms and third-party media while Sohu sells ads around its news and video content. Watch Alimama’s marketing business, where Taobao and Tmall merchants pay to reach consumers, rather than Alibaba’s group-wide results.
