Intrepid Potash, Inc. supplies crop nutrients to distributors, cooperatives and dealers that sell to farmers. Its largest revenue source is Trio®, a specialty fertilizer combining potassium, sulfur and magnesium; potash supplies most of the remaining revenue. It also sells potash to animal-feed and industrial customers, directly and through distributors. Most customers are in the United States.
The company produces these minerals in New Mexico and Utah. Potash production uses ponds where solar evaporation leaves mineral crystals for recovery, making output dependent on warm, dry weather. Trio® comes from a single underground mine in Carlsbad. Most potash and Trio® sales are in the U.S. spot market, so earnings depend on global fertilizer supply and prices, as well as farmers’ planting and fertilizer-buying decisions.
A smaller business sells water, brine and land-use rights to oil-and-gas operators. Demand follows drilling activity and operators’ choice between fresh and recycled water. New Mexico water rights restrict where and how water may be used; changing mining-related rights to serve oil-and-gas development requires state approval. A final court ruling limits the company’s Pecos River rights to industrial-salt processing and requires repayment of water previously sold under temporary authorizations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Mosaic and Intrepid compete for agricultural distributors’ and retailers’ potash purchases, so both are exposed to potash prices and farmers’ fertilizer spending. Watch Mosaic’s potash business rather than its phosphate products for the closer read on Intrepid.
Nutrien’s large Canadian potash business competes with Intrepid for North American fertilizer buyers, while Intrepid sells substantially all its potash in the United States. Nutrien accounted for 57% of North American potash production in 2025, making its potash business important to watch for competitive pressure on Intrepid’s delivered prices.
Compass Minerals International, Inc. sells sulfate of potash to crop-input buyers who also buy Intrepid’s Trio, putting the two in competition for specialty-fertilizer spending. Watch its Protassium+ sales to distributors, retailers and growers for demand for low-chloride potassium-and-sulfur fertilizers; Trio also supplies magnesium.
SQM competes with Intrepid’s potash and Trio by selling potassium chloride, potassium sulfate and specialty plant nutrients through its worldwide distribution network. Watch its potassium and specialty plant-nutrition revenue rather than the company-wide result, since lithium contributed 50% of SQM’s revenue in 2025.
CF Industries and Intrepid both depend on farmers’ fertilizer spending, but CF sells nitrogen fertilizers while Intrepid sells potash and Trio. CF’s fertilizer sales offer a view of crop-nutrient demand, not a direct measure of demand for Intrepid’s potassium products.
CVR Partners sells nitrogen fertilizer through U.S. agricultural retailers and distributors, tying it to the same farm spending that supports Intrepid’s potash and Trio sales. Its sales of liquid nitrogen fertilizer—urea ammonium nitrate, or UAN—to those buyers are the relevant line to watch, rather than ammonia sold to industrial customers.
LSB INDUSTRIES INC sells ammonia and liquid nitrogen fertilizer, UAN, into U.S. grain-production markets that also drive demand for Intrepid’s agricultural fertilizers. Watch its agricultural sales separately from its industrial chemicals to gauge fertilizer demand from those grain markets.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
For Intrepid, weekly U.S. crude oil and fuel stocks signal how tight oil supply is, which can affect oil prices, Permian drilling activity and customers’ demand for its water and related oilfield services.
Read the stock level as a signal of oil-market tightness, not a direct measure of Intrepid’s sales: tighter supply may support oil prices and Permian drilling, while looser supply may weaken them, affecting demand for its water and related services.
LSB INDUSTRIES INC earningsLXU
LSB Industries' agricultural fertilizer sales offer a read on fertilizer demand in grain-producing markets, giving Intrepid Potash a clue about the farm-related market for its potash and Trio®.
Separate LSB's agricultural fertilizer sales from its industrial chemicals sales: steady or rising agricultural sales suggest fertilizer buying in grain markets is holding up; falling agricultural sales, even if industrial sales are steady, point to softer farm-related demand. Nitrogen is not a direct measure of potash demand, but this helps show whether the farm market Intrepid Potash serves is strengthening or weakening.
The Mosaic Company earningsMOS
Mosaic's potash business competes with Intrepid Potash for agricultural distributors' and retailers' purchases, so its report shows whether their shared potash market is holding up on demand and price.
Focus on Mosaic's potash sales volume and realized price: if both hold or rise, demand and pricing among shared buyers appear better supported; weaker volume or price points to softer demand or greater price pressure that could also weigh on Intrepid Potash's potash business. Their products and sales mixes differ, so Mosaic is a market signal, not a substitute for Intrepid Potash's own sales and prices.
Intrepid Potash, Inc earningsThis company
Intrepid Potash's report will show whether Trio® sales and prices are translating into stronger segment gross margin, and whether its potash business is holding up on volume and price.
Read Trio® tons sold and net realized price per ton alongside segment gross margin: rising volume and price with stronger margin show sales gains are outweighing production costs, while rising sales with weaker margin suggest costs or product mix are absorbing them. Then check whether potash tons and net realized price per ton are holding up; together, these show whether improvement is confined to Trio® or extends to both core fertilizer lines.
Compass Minerals International, Inc. earningsCMP
Compass Minerals' Protassium+ competes with Intrepid Potash's Trio® for low-chloride specialty fertilizer spending, so its sales show how demand is holding up among growers and channel buyers.
Watch Protassium+ sales to distributors, retailers and growers: steady or rising sales show buyers are still purchasing low-chloride specialty fertilizers, a more supportive demand backdrop for Intrepid Potash's Trio®; falling sales point to weaker spending and potentially more cautious buyers for Trio®. Protassium+ does not contain Trio®'s magnesium, so the products are not identical.
