Farmers buying fertilizer, crop protection products and seed provide most of Nutrien’s revenue through its agricultural retail network in North America, Australia and South America. Its consultants help farmers plan crops and apply inputs, while Nutrien Financial earns interest by financing purchases of the company’s products and services.
Nutrien also mines potash in Saskatchewan and manufactures nitrogen and phosphate products, supplying its retail locations and selling to agricultural, industrial and animal-feed customers. Nitrogen and potash account for most of its fertilizer manufacturing revenue; phosphate is a smaller business. Canadian potash destined for markets outside Canada and the United States is sold exclusively through Canpotex, an export business Nutrien jointly owns with another producer. Canpotex markets and delivers the potash, and Nutrien receives the sales proceeds after Canpotex’s costs.
The business depends on farmers’ seasonal purchasing and on delivering inputs during short, weather-dependent planting and application windows. Fertilizer selling prices move with global supply and demand, while nitrogen production depends on reliable, affordable natural gas. Its Trinidad nitrogen facility remains shut down because of gas-supply and port-access problems. Mines and factories also need environmental, mining and other government permits to keep operating.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Nutrien’s results hinge on fertilizer prices and farmer spending, while privately held Canpotex markets and distributes its Canadian potash sold outside the United States and Canada.
Mosaic and Nutrien compete to sell potash and phosphate fertilizers to overlapping buyers worldwide, so fertilizer prices and farmers’ ability to afford nutrients matter to both. Watch Mosaic’s potash and phosphate sales for a read on the markets Nutrien serves.
CF Industries and Nutrien compete for North American fertilizer buyers with ammonia, urea and liquid urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer (UAN), sharing exposure to nitrogen prices, farm demand and natural gas costs. CF Industries’ margins on these products offer a comparison for Nutrien’s nitrogen business.
ICL Group Ltd. competes with Nutrien in potash for agriculture and purified phosphoric acid for chemical markets, linking both to potash prices and phosphate-product demand. Watch ICL’s Potash and Phosphate Solutions results rather than its whole-company sales to assess these overlaps.
Intrepid Potash, Inc and Nutrien compete to supply potash fertilizer to US agricultural buyers, with freight costs helping decide who offers the better delivered price. Intrepid says its US locations support higher realized prices than rivals shipping farther, making its potash pricing a useful check on Nutrien’s US competition.
CVR Partners, LP competes with Nutrien in US wholesale sales of ammonia and liquid urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer (UAN) to agricultural distributors and industrial customers. Its UAN sales to fertilizer retailers and distributors offer a focused view of the seasonal farm demand that also matters to Nutrien.
LSB INDUSTRIES INC competes with Nutrien in US sales of ammonia, liquid urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer (UAN) and industrial nitrogen chemicals, sharing exposure to nitrogen prices and natural gas costs. Watch its agricultural fertilizer sales separately from acids and other chemicals sold to industrial customers to distinguish farm demand from industrial demand.
LSB INDUSTRIES INC earningsLXU
LSB Industries reports agricultural fertilizer sales separately from industrial chemicals, showing whether demand is moving together across two nitrogen markets that Nutrien also serves.
Separate LSB’s agricultural fertilizer sales from its acids and other industrial chemical sales. Strength in both would show that farm and industrial customers are supporting nitrogen demand; strength in only one would show that the other group may be lagging, so the overall market alone would not tell the whole story for Nutrien’s nitrogen business.
The Mosaic Company earningsMOS
Mosaic also sells potash and phosphate to buyers worldwide, so its report will show whether demand is holding in fertilizer markets it shares with Nutrien.
Look at Mosaic’s potash and phosphate sales separately. If both hold or strengthen, demand is supporting the markets Nutrien shares; if both weaken, the signal for Nutrien’s overlapping products is less supportive. If only one weakens, the pressure appears more specific to that fertilizer market rather than common to both.
Nutrien Ltd. earningsThis company
Nutrien earns through both agricultural retail and fertilizer production, and this report will show whether sales and costs are working together to support profit in each business.
Read potash and nitrogen sales and volumes alongside each segment’s adjusted EBITDA, Nutrien’s adjusted measure of operating profit. If sales or volumes strengthen and segment profit rises too, pricing and demand are outweighing costs such as natural gas and freight; if sales hold but profit weakens, those costs may be consuming the benefit. Then check whether Retail sales and profit hold up: Retail is Nutrien’s largest business by sales, so weakness there would leave the upstream businesses doing more to support overall earnings.
CF Industries Holding, Inc. earningsCF
CF Industries also sells ammonia, urea and UAN in North America, and its report will show whether prices for those nitrogen products are covering production costs, a useful comparison for Nutrien’s nitrogen business.
Read CF Industries’ nitrogen margins alongside natural gas costs. Stronger margins without a matching sharp rise in gas costs suggest selling prices are covering inputs more comfortably, a supportive signal for Nutrien’s nitrogen market; weaker margins suggest the gap between product prices and costs is narrowing, pointing to greater pressure in the business Nutrien competes in.
Intrepid Potash, Inc earningsIPI
Intrepid Potash says its US locations can support higher realized prices; its report will show whether that proximity translates into potash pricing power against the competition Nutrien faces in the US.
Read Intrepid Potash’s realized potash prices in light of the freight advantage it attributes to its US locations. Stronger pricing would suggest nearby supply helps it compete on delivered price, giving Nutrien a stronger local rival; if pricing does not reflect that advantage, proximity alone may not be changing the competitive picture.
