Company

Company overview

CVR Partners, LP makes ammonia at its plants in Coffeyville, Kansas, and East Dubuque, Illinois, then converts some of it into urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer, known as UAN. UAN supplies most of its revenue and is sold mainly to retailers and distributors serving agriculture. It also sells ammonia to agricultural and industrial customers. Customer contracts generally set fixed prices for less than a year, with no long-term minimum-purchase commitments. Its largest customers account for a substantial share of sales.

The plants use different inputs to make hydrogen for ammonia production. Coffeyville uses petroleum coke, with a substantial portion supplied by CVR Energy’s adjacent refinery and the rest bought from third parties. East Dubuque uses natural gas bought from third parties. Production therefore depends on continued feedstock supplies and plant operation, while feedstock costs affect what the company earns from fertilizer sales.

Fertilizer prices move with global supply and demand, and customers choose largely on delivered price. Agricultural demand is seasonal and depends on farmers’ expected harvest profitability, crop prices and weather. The plants must also maintain environmental permits and meet rules governing emissions, discharges and waste handling; permit failures or violations can restrict operations or force shutdowns.

CVR Partners’ results hinge on nitrogen fertilizer prices and feedstock costs; privately held Koch Fertilizer is another major domestic competitor to watch beyond this list.

  • CF Industries competes with CVR Partners for North American fertilizer buyers, selling the same ammonia and liquid nitrogen fertilizer, UAN. Its UAN segment gross margin offers a concrete comparison for CVR Partners’ main product, while CF sells far more nitrogen fertilizer in the United States than other participants.

  • LSB Industries competes with CVR Partners by making ammonia and UAN for U.S. agricultural customers. Watch its fertilizer sales to ranch-land and grain-production markets rather than its industrial chemicals, which serve different buyers.

  • Nutrien’s nitrogen fertilizer production competes with CVR Partners for agricultural spending, but its substantial retail, potash and phosphate businesses make company-wide results a less direct comparison. Watch its Nitrogen segment rather than total fertilizer sales for the closer read on CVR Partners’ market.

  • CVR Partners depends partly on fuel refiner CVR Energy for petroleum coke used to make hydrogen at Coffeyville; CVR Energy also owns its general partner and approximately 37% of its common units. Watch supply from CVR Energy’s adjacent refinery: it provided approximately 36% of CVR Partners’ petroleum coke in 2025, with the rest sourced from third parties.

  • Mosaic and CVR Partners both depend on farmers’ fertilizer spending, although Mosaic sells phosphate and potash to distributors and farmers while CVR Partners sells nitrogen fertilizers. Mosaic’s crop-nutrient sales offer a view of agricultural demand, not a direct comparison for ammonia or UAN prices.

  • Intrepid Potash and CVR Partners both rely on U.S. crop-nutrient purchases, selling U.S.-produced potash and nitrogen fertilizers respectively. Watch Intrepid’s granular potash sales, the form predominantly used in agriculture, rather than sales to industrial or animal-feed customers.
