Company

Company overview

ICL Group Ltd. extracts minerals from the Dead Sea and mines mineral deposits elsewhere, then processes them into products customers use to grow crops or manufacture goods. Phosphate products and specialty crop nutrition are its largest revenue businesses. It turns phosphate rock into acids, fertilizer and specialty phosphates, and sells potash to growers and fertilizer manufacturers.

Its specialty fertilizers include Osmocote, which releases nutrients gradually. Agronomist sales teams advise growers, while distributor partners are invoiced for sales. Beyond agriculture, food manufacturers buy phosphate ingredients such as Joha dairy specialties to control texture and stability. Industrial customers buy bromine compounds, including flame retardants; ICL obtains the bromine from brines left by Dead Sea potash production.

The business depends heavily on potash and phosphate prices and sales volumes, which respond to supply and farmers’ planting and purchasing decisions, rather than on any single customer. Mineral extraction requires government concessions and permits, and production also depends on environmental approvals for emissions and waste handling. Its Dead Sea concession expires in March 2030; continued operations require a new concession, which Israel intends to award through a competitive process. ICL is not assured of winning it.

ICL’s results hinge on fertilizer markets and bromine demand; watch Lanxess, absent from this list, as both a major bromine rival and a long-term buyer of ICL’s bromine.

  • Mosaic and ICL compete for fertilizer spending by growers and crop-nutrient distributors worldwide, with both selling phosphate and potash fertilizers. Mosaic’s Phosphate and Potash segment sales offer a read on the same fertilizer markets that matter to ICL.

  • Nutrien competes with ICL for growers’ spending on potash and specialty fertilizers, and for chemical and food customers’ purchases of phosphates. Nutrien’s Potash segment is a focused place to watch conditions in one of ICL’s core fertilizer markets, rather than its broader agricultural retail business.

  • Albemarle competes with ICL in supplying bromine for industrial products, and both draw on Dead Sea resources, with Albemarle doing so through a joint venture on the Jordanian side. For ICL, watch Albemarle’s bromine supply news rather than its lithium battery-material business.

  • Intrepid Potash, Inc competes with ICL to supply potash fertilizer to US agricultural customers, but produces locally while ICL ships into that market. Watch Intrepid’s realized potash prices: it says shorter transport routes can support higher net prices than those earned by competitors shipping farther.

  • CF Industries and ICL both depend on growers’ fertilizer budgets, although CF sells nitrogen fertilizers while ICL sells potash, phosphate and specialty fertilizers. CF’s granular urea and liquid nitrogen fertilizer sales offer a view of growers’ nutrient spending, not a direct measure of demand for ICL’s products.

Mosaic and ICL both sell phosphate and potash to growers and crop-nutrient distributors, so Mosaic’s sales in those businesses show whether their shared fertilizer markets are strengthening or weakening.

ICL’s phosphate and potash businesses rely on selling prices, but raw-material and operating costs can erode the gain; this report will show whether higher prices reach operating income.
