Company

Company overview

Most of Compass Minerals International, Inc.’s revenue comes from salt. Government agencies and road-maintenance contractors in North America and the UK buy bulk salt to keep public roads clear of ice, mainly through tendered bids and longer-term contracts. The company also sells salt for water softening, food preparation and industrial uses through retailers and resellers.

Winter weather is the biggest driver of deicing demand. Compass Minerals stockpiles salt ahead of winter and uses storage and distribution depots to deliver when customers need it. Transportation and handling account for a substantial part of delivered cost, making mine locations and reliable deliveries important. Its North American deicing supply depends heavily on its two salt mines in the region.

The smaller plant-nutrition business sells Protassium+ sulfate of potash fertilizer, mainly to distributors and dealers that resell it to growers, sometimes blended with other fertilizers. It serves crops and soils that favor low-chloride potassium nutrients. Production near Ogden, Utah, depends on Great Salt Lake brine and hot, dry weather for evaporation. The company’s agreement with Utah authorities caps brine withdrawals according to lake levels, limiting access to this production input.

Compass Minerals’ results depend mainly on winter deicing demand and salt prices in North America and the UK, which these fertilizer-focused peers only partly reflect.

  • Intrepid Potash competes with Compass Minerals by selling potassium fertilizers to agricultural buyers and salt and magnesium chloride for salt-based uses. Watch its agricultural potash sales for clues to demand for potassium nutrients, while its salt and magnesium chloride sales overlap with Compass Minerals’ much larger salt business.

  • SQM competes for Compass Minerals’ agricultural buyers with potassium sulfate and specialty plant nutrients, but lithium and iodine dominate SQM’s revenue. Its specialty plant nutrition sales are the more relevant line to watch for demand facing Compass Minerals’ Protassium+ fertilizer.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

For Compass Minerals, the Fed’s policy rate—the benchmark that influences borrowing costs—matters because variable-rate debt can cost more or less to service, leaving more or less cash for operations and capital spending.
