Company

Company overview

Primis Financial Corp. owns Primis Bank, which serves individuals and small and medium-sized businesses through branches in Virginia and Maryland and through digital banking. Customers place deposits with the bank, which uses the money to make loans and buy investment securities. Borrowers pay interest and loan fees; the bank also earns interest on securities and charges account fees. Its operating earnings depend primarily on the interest it earns after paying interest on deposits and borrowings.

Business lending focuses on commercial real estate and other commercial credit. The bank also lends nationally to doctors, dentists, veterinarians and their practices through its Panacea Financial division. It provides short-term funding to mortgage originators until they sell their loans to investors. Separately, its subsidiary Primis Mortgage Company originates home loans and sells most of them in the secondary market, earning fee income.

Real estate loans make up most of the loan portfolio, so repayment depends heavily on property income and borrowers’ finances, particularly in Virginia, Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. The business also depends on retaining deposits at a cost below the income earned on loans and investments. Mortgage income depends on demand for home loans and buyers for those loans. Banking capital requirements can restrict growth, and regulators limit dividends the bank can pay to the parent company.

Beyond mortgage volumes and deposit-funded lending margins, watch Primis’s partnership with Panacea Financial Holdings, which owns the Panacea brand and helps originate healthcare loans.

  • Northpointe Bancshares competes with Primis to fund independent mortgage originators nationwide, lend to homebuyers and attract digital deposits. Its funding for mortgage companies before they sell loans to investors offers a close comparison for Primis’s mortgage warehouse business.

  • Atlantic Union Bankshares competes with Primis for business and consumer borrowers and depositors across Virginia, Maryland and the Washington area. Its business-loan and deposit results are the lines to watch for competition in Primis’s branch markets.

  • Prosperity Bancshares and Primis both finance mortgage companies between loan closing and sale to investors. Watch Prosperity’s Warehouse Purchase Program, which lets those clients fund home loans in their own name while awaiting sale, for a comparison with Primis’s warehouse lending.

  • Customers Bancorp, through Customers Bank, competes with Primis to finance mortgage companies, make specialized business loans nationally and attract deposits digitally. Its mortgage-finance lending and digital deposit business are the closest comparisons for those parts of Primis.

  • Ameris Bancorp competes with Primis for homebuyers and mortgage-company clients: both make residential mortgages and provide mortgage originators with short-term funding before loans are sold to investors, known as warehouse financing.

  • United Bankshares, through United Bank, competes with Primis for commercial borrowers, household deposits and mortgage customers in Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area.

  • Forbright competes with Primis for digitally acquired banking customers, and both lend to healthcare borrowers. Their lending focus differs: Forbright emphasizes healthcare facilities, while Primis’s Panacea division focuses on practitioners and their practices.

  • First Business Financial Services offers a similarly sized comparison for Primis’s lending to small and medium-sized businesses and professionals, with both reaching clients beyond traditional branches. First Business relies on specialized bankers and client relationships rather than a retail branch network to attract customers and deposits.
