Company

Company overview

Eastern Bankshares, Inc. is the holding company for Eastern Bank, which serves individuals, businesses and municipalities mainly in greater Boston and surrounding parts of Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Customers deposit money with the bank, which uses those funds principally to make loans. Commercial lending accounts for most of its loan book, with commercial real estate the largest category; it also finances home purchases and other household borrowing.

Borrowers’ interest payments supply most of its interest income, with securities investments providing another source. After paying interest on deposits and other funding, the bank retains the difference as net interest income, its main revenue source. It also charges customers for banking services and earns investment-management and trust fees under the Cambridge Trust Wealth Management brand, with asset-management fees largely tied to the value of customers’ assets.

The business depends on retaining deposits at a cost below what its loans and investments earn. Much of its lending is secured by local real estate, tying repayment and collateral values to the regional economy and property market. Banking regulations require minimum capital and can restrict activities and distributions; certain dividends and share repurchases require regulatory approval.

  • Provident Financial Services and Eastern Bankshares both use customer deposits to fund commercial property and business loans and earn fees managing clients’ wealth, but serve different northeastern markets. Provident’s wealth-management income offers a comparison for Eastern’s advisory fees, not a direct read on its greater Boston borrowers.

  • Fulton Financial and Eastern Bankshares both rely on northeastern customer relationships for commercial property and business lending, alongside wealth services and tools to manage interest-rate exposure. Watch the rates Fulton earns on its floating-rate business loans as a comparison for Eastern’s loan income, while allowing for hedges that change how rate moves reach earnings.

  • WSFS Financial and Eastern Bankshares both fund relationship-based business lending with deposits and manage wealth and trusts for clients in northeastern metropolitan markets. Compare WSFS’s commercial lending and Wealth and Trust results with Eastern’s, but separate out Cash Connect, which supplies cash and handling services to ATM and safe operators nationwide.

  • Western New England Bancorp, through Westfield Bank, shares Eastern Bank’s exposure to Massachusetts property lending: both use community-bank deposits to fund substantial loans to commercial property borrowers and homeowners.

  • Ameris Bancorp and Eastern Bankshares both earn substantial interest from borrowers and have material commercial property exposure, making property-credit developments and loan yields useful comparisons. Watch Ameris’s commercial property credit performance and loan interest income alongside Eastern’s, rather than treating its property exposure as the same portfolio.

  • United Community Banks is a similarly sized comparison for Eastern Bankshares: both build customer relationships through business and household loans, deposits and wealth services, though United’s banking footprint is in the Southeast. Its business-loan pricing is worth watching because deposit costs and competition help determine the rates it charges borrowers.

  • WesBanco and Eastern Bankshares combine similarly sized banks lending to businesses and households with substantial services managing customers’ trusts and investments. Watch the value of client assets managed by WesBanco’s trust and investment business as a comparison for Eastern’s asset-based advisory fees; those client assets are separate from WesBanco’s own balance sheet.

  • BankUnited and Eastern Bankshares are comparably sized banks serving small and middle-market businesses with loans, deposits and cash-management services. Watch BankUnited’s commercial deposits and business lending for a comparison of customer demand and funding competition, while keeping its Florida and New York focus distinct from Eastern’s greater Boston market.
