Company

Company overview

Arbutus Biopharma Corporation is developing imdusiran and AB-101 for chronic hepatitis B, aiming to help patients control the infection without continuing treatment. Both remain in clinical development, and neither generates product-sales revenue. Selling them would require regulatory approval; AB-101’s U.S. clinical program is subject to an FDA hold.

Its revenue comes mainly from other companies licensing its technology, rather than from selling its own medicines. The technology packages genetic material in protective fat-based particles so it can reach target cells, a method called lipid nanoparticle delivery, or LNP. Alnylam uses it in ONPATTRO, whose sales generate royalties for Arbutus. Arbutus retains one royalty interest, while OMERS receives another until it collects an agreed total. This income depends on Alnylam’s sales, which have declined as its newer drug AMVUTTRA replaces ONPATTRO.

Genevant licenses Arbutus’s delivery platforms for uses outside hepatitis B, while Arbutus retains hepatitis B rights. Arbutus can receive a share of qualifying sublicensing income and patent-enforcement proceeds through Genevant. Moderna has agreed to a settlement payment from which Arbutus is entitled to a share after litigation costs; an additional payment depends on a dispute over vaccine doses supplied under government contracts and may be repayable. The settlement gives Moderna a royalty-free license for covered vaccines, rather than an ongoing royalty obligation. Separate patent litigation against Pfizer and BioNTech remains unresolved.

Arbutus's results depend heavily on privately held Genevant turning its licensed drug-delivery patents into licensing income and patent recoveries, alongside progress in Arbutus's hepatitis B therapies.

  • Moderna's patent settlement materially affects Arbutus's value: the vaccine seller received a fully paid-up, royalty-free license, while Arbutus is entitled to 20% of the fixed $950 million payment to Arbutus and Genevant after litigation costs. Watch the appeal over certain government-contract vaccine doses, which governs an additional payment of up to $1.3 billion that may be repayable.

  • Roivant Sciences and Arbutus both benefit when Roivant's Genevant business earns money from licensing Arbutus's drug-delivery technology or enforcing its patents; Roivant-associated entities also held about 20% of Arbutus as of March 18, 2026. Genevant helps pharmaceutical and biotech partners deliver their medicines, making partner licensing payments and patent recoveries the relevant signals for Arbutus.

  • BioNTech could become a source of patent proceeds for Arbutus, but the claims remain pending: Arbutus and Genevant seek monetary relief over the technology that carries mRNA in Comirnaty, the COVID-19 vaccine BioNTech commercializes with Pfizer. Watch the Comirnaty patent case rather than treating vaccine sales as an established royalty stream for Arbutus.

  • Pfizer's Comirnaty litigation could bring Arbutus proceeds from patents covering the particles that carry vaccine mRNA, rather than from Pfizer's broader medicine sales. Arbutus generally viewed the court's September 2025 interpretation of disputed patent terms as favorable; further rulings in the pending case are the news to watch.

  • Alnylam pays Arbutus for licensed technology that carries RNA medicines into cells, linking Arbutus revenue to ONPATTRO sales and milestones for additional licensed products. Watch ONPATTRO rather than Alnylam's overall growth: AMVUTTRA is replacing its sales, and Arbutus expects the associated royalty revenue to keep falling.

  • Aligos Therapeutics is developing drugs that alter assembly of the hepatitis B virus's protein shell, competing for the chronic hepatitis B patients Arbutus targets with imdusiran and AB-101. Its first patient dosed in a Phase 2 trial in 2025 is a concrete development milestone to track; its disclosed customer revenue comes from contracted research services, not HBV drug sales.

  • Precision BioSciences' PBGENE-HBV uses gene editing to pursue the same hepatitis B patients as Arbutus's imdusiran and AB-101. Precision has prioritized this wholly owned program among its two lead programs, making PBGENE-HBV development progress the relevant competitive signal for Arbutus.

  • Assembly Biosciences and Arbutus are developing hepatitis B treatments that could compete for the same patients. For Arbutus holders, Assembly's HBV development matters more than its headline revenue growth: its 2025 collaboration revenue increase was driven mainly by transferring an HPI program license to Gilead, not by HBV medicine sales.

  • GSK's hepatitis B drug development competes with Arbutus's chronic hepatitis B pipeline, even though GSK earns revenue from a much broader range of medicines and vaccines. Watch its HBV treatment progress for pressure on imdusiran and AB-101, rather than reading GSK's overall sales as a measure of that competition.

  • Ionis Pharmaceuticals' bepirovirsen competes with Arbutus's imdusiran by targeting RNA to reduce hepatitis B viral antigens. Progress in bepirovirsen is the relevant comparison for imdusiran, Arbutus's injected RNA-interference treatment, rather than sales of Ionis's already marketed medicines.

  • Arrowhead's partnered elebsiran program competes with Arbutus's imdusiran, with both using RNA interference to reduce viral antigens in chronic hepatitis B patients.

  • Gilead already sells hepatitis B medicines and is developing further treatments for the patients Arbutus hopes to serve with imdusiran and AB-101. Its HBV treatment advances are the relevant competitive signal, rather than sales across its broader HIV, cancer and liver-disease portfolio.
