Company overview

Precision BioSciences develops treatments that edit DNA inside the body to address genetic and infectious diseases. Its ARCUS platform can insert, remove or eliminate genetic material. The company is prioritizing its wholly owned PBGENE-HBV program for chronic hepatitis B and PBGENE-DMD program for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Both are in early clinical development; the company has never commercialized a product or earned revenue from product sales.

Pharmaceutical partners pay for access to its technology and programs through licensing payments, development milestones and research funding. Precision licensed azer-cel to TG Therapeutics for autoimmune diseases and other uses outside cancer, and to Imugene for cancer. These arrangements generate milestone payments and could provide royalties if licensed products reach the market. Novartis was a major revenue source, but its hemoglobinopathy collaboration has ended, leaving Precision without rights to future payments under that agreement. Partner revenue depends on collaborators continuing development and meeting agreed milestones.

Precision needs further financing and successful clinical development before it can build a product-sales business. It cannot market its candidates without regulatory approval. ARCUS also relies on core patents licensed from Duke University; products based on that technology sold in the United States must be substantially manufactured there.

Precision's results hinge on its hepatitis B and Duchenne trials and partner milestones, so also watch azer-cel developer Imugene and privately held ARCUS gene-insertion partner iECURE, neither shown here.

  • TG Therapeutics, Inc. pays Precision for rights to develop azer-cel outside cancer, so its progressive multiple sclerosis trial can bring Precision milestone income and, if approved and sold, royalties. Its March 2026 clinical milestone earned Precision $7.5 million; watch azer-cel progress rather than treating TG's existing BRIUMVI sales as Precision revenue.

  • Arbutus Biopharma Corporation is pursuing the same chronic hepatitis B patients as Precision's PBGENE-HBV, but with imdusiran to suppress viral RNA and AB-101 to strengthen immune responses rather than gene editing. Watch whether these treatments sustain viral-marker reductions without continued treatment—the outcome both approaches seek.

  • Sarepta Therapeutics competes with Precision's developing PBGENE-DMD by selling Duchenne exon-skipping medicines and the gene therapy ELEVIDYS. ELEVIDYS's 2025 boxed warning for acute liver injury and failure and removal of non-ambulatory patients from its U.S. indication make its safety and eligible patient population concrete points to watch alongside Precision's trial.

  • Intellia Therapeutics, Inc provides a more advanced clinical and regulatory benchmark for Precision's liver-directed HBV editing, although it treats different diseases. Its Phase 3 lonvo-z for hereditary angioedema and nex-z for transthyretin amyloidosis are the programs to watch for progress in editing genes inside the body.

  • Caribou Biosciences, Inc. both pays Precision to use cell-therapy patents, with potential royalties if licensed products reach sales, and develops lymphoma CAR-T treatments competing with Imugene-licensed azer-cel. Its vispa-cel trial in relapsed or refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the clearest program to compare with azer-cel's cancer development.

  • Solid Biosciences Inc. is developing SGT-003 for the same Duchenne patient population Precision seeks to treat with PBGENE-DMD, using gene therapy rather than gene editing. Watch SGT-003's safety and efficacy progress as a competing treatment, not as an existing source of product sales.

  • REGENXBIO Inc.'s RGX-202 is another genetic treatment candidate for Duchenne, making it a competing development program for Precision's PBGENE-DMD. RGX-202's safety and efficacy are the relevant comparison, rather than REGENXBIO's separate income from licensing its gene-delivery vectors.

  • Beam Therapeutics Inc. and Precision share exposure to advances and setbacks in gene-editing medicines, but Beam changes individual DNA bases while Precision's ARCUS inserts or removes DNA. Beam earns revenue mainly from licensing and research collaborations, not product sales, so its clinical progress and partner agreements are the useful signals.

  • Prime Medicine, Inc. mirrors Precision's combination of developing liver gene-editing medicines and licensing cell-therapy technology, rather than targeting the same liver disease. Watch its Wilson disease and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency programs for in vivo progress, and its BMS T-cell partnership for milestone and royalty opportunities comparable to Precision's licensing business.

  • Editas Medicine, Inc. and Precision use competing platforms to edit genes inside the body, so clinical progress and delivery advances matter to both. Watch Editas's cardiovascular candidate EDIT-401 and its work editing liver cells for comparison with Precision's ARCUS development, not as treatments for the same disease.

  • Metagenomi Therapeutics, Inc. offers a technological comparison for Precision's ARCUS by developing medicines that insert genes or switch them off. Its MGX-001 hemophilia A gene-insertion program is the concrete comparison for insertion, while its Ionis-partnered cardiometabolic programs test gene knockout.

  • CRISPR Therapeutics AG overlaps Precision in both editing genes inside the body and developing engineered T-cell treatments for cancer and autoimmune disease, where Precision licenses azer-cel to partners. Its CAR-T trial progress is therefore relevant to azer-cel's competitive position, while its in vivo programs offer a separate platform comparison.

  • Assembly Biosciences, Inc develops HBV treatments competing with Precision's PBGENE-HBV, but also develops antivirals outside HBV. Its 2025 collaboration-revenue increase was driven mainly by an HPI program license to Gilead, so revenue growth alone is not a measure of the competitive pressure on Precision's hepatitis B program.
