Company overview

Developers use Unity Software’s Unity Engine to build real-time 2D and 3D games and interactive experiences, then deploy them across mobile devices, PCs and consoles. They pay for access mainly through Create Solutions subscriptions; Unity also sells support and services, including cloud hosting. This business depends on developers continuing to choose Unity’s tools and renewing their subscriptions.

Grow Solutions supplies most of Unity’s revenue. It helps app publishers and device providers sell advertising space to advertisers, with Unity retaining a share of the revenue or profit. Its offerings include the Unity Ad Network, powered by Unity Vector. Customers can use Grow even if they built their content without Unity, and Create customers do not have to use it. Unity also helps developers launch and operate mobile games, earning revenue from advertising and related purchases in those games.

The advertising business depends on advertiser spending, audiences using customers’ apps and content, and access to data used to target ads. Unity and its customers also depend on platforms such as the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Their tracking, data-access and monetization rules can limit Unity’s services, while privacy laws restrict how it can collect and use personal information.

Unity Software’s results hinge on mobile-ad performance and game-creator demand, with privately held Moloco and Voodoo adding competition this list does not show.

  • AppLovin competes with Unity for advertisers’ mobile-user acquisition budgets and publishers’ app ad space, helping advertisers find users and publishers earn advertising revenue. Watch Axon Ads Manager’s ability to meet advertisers’ spending-return goals: it generates substantially all of AppLovin’s revenue and competes for the budgets Unity seeks.

  • Liftoff Mobile, Inc. competes with Unity by helping mobile advertisers acquire users and app publishers sell ad space. Its Core Advertising revenue, predominantly powered by Cortex-backed demand tools, is the line to watch for competition facing Unity’s mobile-ad products.

  • Digital Turbine, Inc. competes with Unity to help advertisers acquire mobile users and publishers, carriers and device makers earn money from advertising. Its App Growth Platform, which combines advertising and ad-monetization tools, is the closer comparison for Unity than its app-delivery business.

  • Google competes with Unity for advertisers seeking measurable responses and for publishers’ ad space, while Unity’s mobile-ad business also depends on Google’s Android rules. Watch Android privacy controls and Google Play policy changes that could restrict the data Unity uses to target ads or its access to the platform.

  • Meta Platforms competes with Unity for advertisers’ performance-marketing budgets by selling placements that reach mobile users. Its Family of Apps advertising revenue is the relevant line to watch, rather than Reality Labs’ hardware, software and content sales.

  • Roblox competes with Unity for developers building interactive games and experiences by combining creation and monetization in one platform. The distinction is distribution: Roblox keeps those experiences on its own platform, while Unity’s tools let creators publish across platforms.

  • Take-Two’s Zynga mobile games and Unity’s game-making and monetization tools both depend on mobile-game engagement, player spending and advertising demand. Watch Zynga’s mobile-game activity and revenue from in-game purchases and ads for signs of the economy supporting Unity’s developer and advertising customers.

  • Entravision Communication’s Smadex competes directly with Unity for advertisers’ mobile-first performance campaigns. Keep Smadex separate from Entravision’s broadcast and local-marketing businesses, where local advertisers pay to reach Latino consumers: those businesses are not the direct comparison for Unity.

  • The Trade Desk competes with Unity for advertisers’ automated ad-buying budgets, but serves campaigns across more channels rather than primarily mobile apps. Its fees generally take a percentage of agencies’ and advertisers’ platform spending, making that spending a broader advertising-demand comparison rather than a pure mobile-app signal.

  • Magnite, Inc. competes with Unity by helping publishers auction ad space to buyers and earn advertising revenue, generally retaining a share of the spending it handles. Its greater exposure to connected television means news about its large TV publishers is less directly comparable with Unity’s mobile-app advertising business.
