Company overview

Digital Turbine helps app developers find users and advertisers reach people on mobile devices. Most revenue comes from On Device Solutions, which uses wireless-carrier and device-maker partnerships to deliver apps and display advertising within device features such as browser start pages and unlock screens. Developers and advertisers pay for app distribution and advertising, and Digital Turbine shares revenue with the carriers and device makers that provide access to users.

Its other business, App Growth Platform, connects advertising space in mobile apps and games with advertisers seeking customers. Publishers integrate its tools into their apps, allowing advertisers to bid for ad placements in real time. Advertisers can also run campaigns through DT DSP and DT Offer Wall. Digital Turbine earns fees tied to ad displays, installations, other customer actions or advertising spend, and pays publishers for their advertising space.

The business depends on advertising budgets and continued access to partner devices and apps. A small group of carriers supplies much of its device-based distribution; their agreements generally do not require them to distribute its products, and some allow early termination. Privacy laws also limit how it can use and share user information for advertising, including California restrictions on disclosures treated as sales of personal information.

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

  • AppLovin competes with Digital Turbine for advertisers seeking mobile-app users and publishers seeking income from in-app ads. Watch Axon Ads Manager revenue, which accounts for substantially all of AppLovin’s revenue and reflects advertisers paying to reach their campaign goals.

  • Liftoff Mobile, Inc. competes with Digital Turbine by helping advertisers acquire mobile-app users and publishers sell in-app ad space. Its Core Advertising revenue is the line to watch for this overlap, rather than Other revenue from retired advertising platforms and non-advertising offerings.

  • Unity Software’s Grow Solutions competes with Digital Turbine’s AGP for advertisers’ mobile-app spending and publishers’ ad-monetization business. Watch Grow Solutions revenue, not revenue from Create Solutions tools used to build and run 2D and 3D content.

  • Alphabet competes with Digital Turbine on two fronts: Google Play distributes apps, while Google’s advertising platforms compete for advertisers’ budgets. Google Play is Digital Turbine’s primary rival to its app delivery through carriers and device makers; Google Services advertising revenue covers the separate advertising contest.

  • Magnite, Inc. and Digital Turbine both help publishers sell digital ad space automatically, but Magnite is more focused on connected TV than Digital Turbine’s mobile-app business. Magnite generally takes a share of buyers’ ad spending, so its connected-TV focus matters when comparing its results with Digital Turbine’s in-app advertising.

  • The Trade Desk competes with Digital Turbine’s DT DSP to help advertisers and agencies buy ad placements through automated bidding. Its platform fees generally rise with clients’ spending on the platform, making that spending the relevant measure of demand for this competing service.

  • Meta Platforms competes for marketers’ budgets by selling ads across its apps to customers who can also use Digital Turbine’s mobile advertising products. Watch advertising in its Family of Apps business, including Facebook and Instagram, rather than Reality Labs hardware, software and content sales.
