Trico Bancshares is the holding company for Tri Counties Bank, which serves individuals and businesses mainly in California. Customers deposit money with the bank and borrow to finance property, business needs and personal spending. The bank uses deposits and other funding to make loans and hold investment securities. Borrowers and securities issuers pay it interest; after funding costs, this supplies most of its revenue. Banking service fees provide a smaller source of income.
Commercial real estate makes up most of its lending, and nearly all its loans are secured by real estate, largely in California. The business therefore depends on borrowers’ income, property operations and California property values. It also needs to retain deposits at costs that leave room to earn on loans and investments, although no single depositor or group supplies a material share of deposits.
Banking rules require adequate capital and can restrict lending, expansion and dividends. The holding company relies on distributions from the bank to meet its commitments, and those distributions are legally restricted.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Community West Bancshares competes with Trico Bancshares through their banks for business borrowers and deposits in overlapping Central California markets. Both collect deposits and lend to businesses, so Community West Bank’s loan and deposit pricing is worth watching for pressure on Tri Counties Bank.
CVB Financial Corp’s Citizens Business Bank competes with Trico Bancshares’ Tri Counties Bank for California businesses’ deposits and borrowing, and both face the state’s commercial-property credit cycle. Watch its business deposit competition and commercial-property lending alongside Tri Counties Bank’s.
Banner Corp.’s Banner Bank competes with Trico Bancshares’ Tri Counties Bank for California business loans and deposits; both earn interest from borrowers and pay interest to depositors. Watch the gap between Banner’s lending income and deposit costs, because the same interest-spread economics drive TriCo’s largest revenue source.
Hope Bancorp, Inc.’s Bank of Hope competes with Trico Bancshares’ Tri Counties Bank for California commercial borrowers and deposits, though Hope also serves substantial markets elsewhere. Both use customer deposits to fund lending, so watch Hope’s California commercial and commercial-real-estate loans rather than treating its nationwide results as a direct read on TriCo.
S&T Bancorp Inc is a useful comparison for Trico Bancshares’ loan growth and funding pressure: both run similarly sized banks that take deposits and lend to individuals and smaller businesses, though S&T Bank operates in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Watch S&T’s lending growth alongside the cost of retaining deposits to gauge the pressures facing this banking model.
Banner Corp. earningsBANR
Banner Corp.'s report will show how much room its lending income has over deposit costs at another California bank, a useful read on the spread economics that drive TriCo Bancshares' earnings.
Watch the gap between Banner's lending income and deposit costs. A wider gap suggests loan income is holding up better than funding costs, a more supportive backdrop for TriCo's interest income; a narrower gap points to more pressure on that banking model, but Banner's figures do not tell us TriCo's own yields or deposit costs.
CVB Financial Corp earningsCVBF
CVB Financial's report will show whether credit conditions in California commercial-property lending are weakening, offering context for TriCo Bancshares' sizable commercial real-estate loan book.
Watch CVB Financial's commercial-property loan performance alongside its credit losses. Stable performance with no rise in losses would suggest California property-credit pressure is not broadly worsening; more delinquencies or losses would put greater focus on TriCo's sizable commercial real-estate book, though the two banks' borrowers and loan mixes differ.
Trico Bancshares earningsThis company
TriCo Bancshares earns most of its revenue from interest on loans and investments, less the cost of deposits and borrowings; this report will show whether that spread holds up and credit losses stay contained.
Read net interest margin alongside credit losses. The margin shows how much loan and investment yields exceed the cost of deposits and borrowings. If it holds or widens while credit losses stay contained, lower funding costs are still supporting earnings without a larger credit bill. If the margin narrows as credit losses rise, TriCo is facing pressure on both income and loan costs.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
TriCo earns most of its revenue from the spread between interest on loans and securities and the cost of deposits and borrowings, so Fed rate decisions can change what the bank earns and pays.

If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise more than expected, TriCo may pay more to attract or retain deposits and face higher borrowing costs; higher yields on loans and securities could partly offset those costs, depending on how quickly each reprices.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall more than expected, deposit and borrowing costs may ease, but yields on TriCo’s loans and securities may also decline, depending on how quickly each reprices.
