Company

Company overview

The J.M. Smucker Company supplies everyday groceries, with coffee its largest sales category and the United States its main market. Retailers buy its Folgers and Dunkin’ packaged coffee, Uncrustables frozen sandwiches, Jif peanut butter and Hostess baked snacks for resale to consumers. Pet products, including Milk-Bone dog snacks and Meow Mix cat food, are another substantial business. It also sells through foodservice distributors and operators serving places such as restaurants and schools.

Walmart, including Sam’s Club, is its largest customer and accounts for a substantial share of sales. Its major customers have no long-term supply contracts obligating them to buy, so continued orders and shelf space matter. Earnings also depend on the cost of ingredients, especially imported green coffee, and whether the company can raise prices without losing buyers to competing brands or store brands.

Smucker licenses the Dunkin’ name for packaged coffee in retail and certain foodservice channels and pays royalties. Those rights do not cover products sold in Dunkin’ restaurants.

Beyond this list, watch Nestlé: it rivals Smucker across packaged coffee, frozen handheld snacks and pet food, while coffee costs and branded-food demand shape Smucker’s results.

  • Keurig Dr Pepper competes for packaged-coffee buyers with Smucker: its McCafé and Peet’s face Folgers, Café Bustelo and Dunkin’. Watch those coffee brands rather than its soft drinks for clues to competition in Smucker’s U.S. retail coffee business.

  • General Mills challenges Smucker for both frozen-snack and pet-treat purchases: Totino’s competes with Uncrustables, while Blue Buffalo and Nudges compete with Smucker’s pet snacks. Those product lines are more relevant to Smucker than General Mills’ cereal business.

  • Kraft Heinz competes with Smucker for retail coffee buyers through Maxwell House and Yuban, and for foodservice customers through individually portioned products that rival Smucker’s and Jif. Its coffee and foodservice portion-control business are the relevant lines to watch.

  • Flowers Foods competes directly for the packaged sweet-snack purchases that support Smucker’s Hostess business through its Tastykake products. Tastykake is the part to watch, rather than Flowers’ broader U.S. bread business.

  • Campbell’s Pepperidge Farm bakery products compete with Smucker’s Hostess for consumers’ packaged sweet-snack spending. Watch Pepperidge Farm’s cookies and bakery products, not Campbell’s soup sales, for the relevant demand signal.

  • Mondelēz competes for the snack purchases behind Smucker’s Hostess sales with its cakes, pastries and other baked snacks. Its baked-snack performance is the relevant comparison, rather than its chocolate business.

  • Conagra and Smucker both depend on consumers buying branded convenience foods through U.S. retailers. Watch Conagra’s sales volumes and shoppers’ response to pricing in Grocery & Snacks for clues to whether branded foods can hold demand against store brands.

  • Starbucks-branded packaged and foodservice coffees compete with Smucker’s Dunkin’, Folgers and Café Bustelo for coffee purchases. Starbucks earns most revenue from stores, so its packaged and foodservice coffee news is more directly relevant to Smucker than store sales.

  • Central Garden & Pet Company competes for pet owners’ treat purchases with Smucker’s Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni and other pet snacks through its dog and cat treats and chews. Focus on those products: its Pet segment also includes supplies, live animals and other businesses outside this overlap.

  • Colgate-Palmolive’s Hill’s cat foods compete with Smucker’s Meow Mix for cat owners’ food spending, though their nutritional and price positions differ. Hill’s cat-food demand is the relevant signal, not Colgate-Palmolive’s oral-care sales.
