Gibraltar Industries supplies products for home repairs, renovations and new construction, primarily in the United States and Canada. Its Residential business generates most of its revenue, selling roofing accessories, metal roofing, gutters and ventilation products. Retailers, wholesalers and distributors buy most of the company’s products for resale; contractors and end users also buy directly. Its acquisition of OmniMax added residential roofing accessories and rainwater-management products.
The company also earns money by designing and building greenhouses and indoor growing facilities for commercial growers and institutions, and structural canopies for businesses such as fuel stations and retailers. Its smaller Infrastructure business sells components such as bridge bearings, expansion joints and pavement seals to transportation contractors and fabricators.
The main residential business depends on spending on home improvement and new housing. One home-improvement retailer is a significant customer, so its purchasing matters to Gibraltar’s sales. Manufacturing also depends on supplies of steel and aluminum, and greenhouse roofing uses glass. The company’s credit agreement limits additional borrowing, acquisitions, asset sales and dividends, subject to exceptions.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Simpson Manufacturing and Gibraltar both depend on spending on homebuilding and renovation: Simpson sells connectors and fasteners that hold structures together, while Gibraltar sells roofing and exterior accessories for those projects.
Quanex Building Products and Gibraltar share exposure to homebuilding and replacement spending, but sell different parts of the building: Quanex supplies window and door manufacturers with components, while Gibraltar sells roofing and exterior accessories. Quanex’s window and door component sales offer a view of demand elsewhere in the same residential market.
UFP Industries shares Gibraltar’s exposure to homebuilding and home-improvement spending through large retailers and distributors: UFP sells wood and composite building products, while Gibraltar sells roofing and exterior accessories. UFP Retail Solutions’ sales to those channels are the relevant comparison, rather than its packaging business.
Masco and Gibraltar both depend on homeowners’ repair and remodeling spending: Masco sells paint and plumbing fixtures, while Gibraltar supplies roofing, drainage and exterior accessories. Masco’s Decorative Architectural Products sales normally strengthen in the second and third calendar quarters, when repair and remodeling activity peaks.
BlueLinx and Gibraltar serve the same homebuilding and remodeling markets at different steps: BlueLinx buys building materials from manufacturers and resells them to local dealers, while Gibraltar manufactures roofing and exterior accessories. BlueLinx’s residential building-material sales offer a view of demand moving through U.S. distribution channels, not evidence that it buys from Gibraltar.
Builders FirstSource and Gibraltar share demand from residential construction and remodeling: Builders FirstSource sells builders manufactured components and building materials, while Gibraltar supplies roofing, drainage and other residential accessories. Sales of its trusses, wall panels and framing packages are a concrete way to follow builders’ activity in those markets.
Boise Cascade and Gibraltar both depend on residential building activity: Boise manufactures wood products and distributes building materials, while Gibraltar supplies roofing and exterior products. Boise’s wood-product and distribution sales show two parts of that market, but are closely linked because its distribution business is its wood business’s largest customer.
Eagle Materials shares both Gibraltar’s residential and infrastructure demand: Eagle sells wallboard and cement, while Gibraltar supplies home exterior accessories and engineered products for transportation contractors. Eagle’s wallboard sales speak mainly to residential construction; its cement business offers a separate view of infrastructure demand.
Mohawk Industries and Gibraltar share the residential remodeling and new-construction spending cycle: Mohawk sells flooring, while Gibraltar sells roofing and exterior accessories. Mohawk’s flooring sales also include commercial projects and markets outside the United States, so they are a broader demand signal than residential spending alone.
Housing Starts (Sep)
For Gibraltar, readings on new homes being started, permitted or sold track construction activity that can change Residential customers’ purchases of its roofing, ventilation and rainwater-management products, and therefore sales.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More homebuilding activity than expected can lift orders from builders, contractors and distributors for Gibraltar’s residential building products, supporting sales.
If it comes in below expectations
Less homebuilding activity than expected can curb those customers’ purchases of Gibraltar’s residential building products, weighing on sales.
Simpson Manufacturing Co., Inc. earningsSSD
Simpson Manufacturing’s report will show whether builders are buying structural connectors and fasteners, a demand signal for the homebuilding and renovation markets Gibraltar Industries also serves.
Watch whether Simpson’s connector and fastener sales strengthen or weaken. Strength would suggest builders and remodelers are continuing projects, supporting the shared markets for Gibraltar Industries’ roofing and exterior accessories. Weakness would point to softer project demand, but would not prove Gibraltar’s sales moved the same way.
Gibraltar Industries, Inc. earningsThis company
Gibraltar Industries earns most of its sales from residential products, and this report will show whether those sales are turning into operating profit more effectively.
Read Residential sales alongside its operating margin, the share of sales left after segment operating costs. Sales growth with a recovering margin would show that demand and product mix are supporting more profitable growth. Sales growth with a falling margin would show that integration or cost pressures are consuming the gains.
