Company

Company overview

Most of Boise Cascade Company’s revenue comes from Building Materials Distribution (BMD), which buys building materials and resells them to dealers, home improvement centers and specialty distributors. Those customers supply homebuilders, contractors and homeowners building or renovating homes. BMD earns a margin on resale, delivering from its warehouses or arranging shipment directly from manufacturers.

Its Wood Products business makes structural wood beams and joists, known as engineered wood products, as well as plywood and lumber. BMD buys most of this business’s output and obtains almost all its engineered wood products from it; most other materials BMD resells come from outside suppliers. This lets Boise Cascade earn margins in both manufacturing and distribution rather than acting only as a wholesaler.

Sales depend heavily on U.S. homebuilding, especially single-family construction, and on repair and remodeling. Large customers account for a substantial share of sales, with Builders FirstSource and Home Depot the largest. Earnings also depend on building-material prices and the cost and availability of logs and other supplies. Mill operations must meet environmental requirements covering air emissions, wastewater and waste disposal.

Beyond this list, Boise Cascade faces important privately held rivals: Specialty Building Products in distribution, and Pacific Woodtech and Roseburg Forest Products in engineered wood.

  • BlueLinx competes directly for Boise Cascade’s wholesale building-material sales to dealers, buying from manufacturers and supplying local sellers rather than end users. Watch its product availability and delivery service—the same factors that help win dealer business from Boise Cascade’s distribution arm.

  • Weyerhaeuser challenges both sides of Boise Cascade’s business: it makes engineered wood for building markets and competes in wholesale building-material distribution. Its Wood Products business is the part to watch for this rivalry, rather than its timberland and land-related businesses.

  • Builders FirstSource is one of Boise Cascade’s largest customers, buying almost entirely through its distribution arm and selling building materials and services to professional homebuilders. Its demand for framing materials offers a read on the U.S. single-family construction activity that also drives Boise Cascade’s engineered-wood demand.

  • West Fraser sells lumber, plywood and laminated veneer lumber that overlap with Boise Cascade’s products, while its oriented strand board competes as a substitute for Boise Cascade’s plywood. Watch its lumber and North American engineered-wood sales for shared housing and pricing pressures, but do not treat OSB prices as a direct proxy for Boise Cascade’s plywood prices.

  • Home Depot is one of Boise Cascade’s largest customers, buying from both its distribution and manufacturing businesses to sell building and home-improvement materials to consumers and professionals. Demand from its remodeler and contractor customers is worth watching for clues to Boise Cascade’s repair-and-remodel business.

  • UFP Industries supplies wood and composite products to retailers and distributors that also buy Boise Cascade’s lumber and distributed decking products. Its Retail Solutions sales to big-box retailers and independent distributors offer a closer comparison for this overlap than its packaging business.

  • Louisiana-Pacific’s engineered-wood siding reaches the same building-product channels served by Boise Cascade’s distribution business, tying both to new-home and renovation demand. Watch its siding sales through dealers, wholesalers and home centers for a read on those channels—not as evidence that it supplies Boise Cascade directly.

  • Simpson Manufacturing sells the connectors and fasteners used alongside Boise Cascade’s engineered wood and lumber in wood-framed construction, so both share exposure to that building activity. Its wood-construction product sales are the relevant signal for Boise Cascade, rather than its concrete products.

  • James Hardie makes siding, trim and outdoor-living products for the same residential projects that buy Boise Cascade’s distributed building materials. Its U.S. and Canadian siding-and-trim sales through distributors, lumberyards and home-improvement retailers offer a read on shared new-construction and renovation demand.
