Otter Tail Corp combines a regulated electric utility with industrial manufacturing businesses. Its largest revenue source is Otter Tail Power Company, which generates and buys electricity, then delivers it to households and businesses in parts of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Most retail customers cannot choose another supplier. State regulators set rates intended to cover operating costs and investment in power facilities while allowing a return, so recovering those costs and earning that return depend on regulatory approval.
PVC pipe is another major revenue source. Northern Pipe Products and Vinyltech make pipe mainly for municipal water and wastewater infrastructure and sell substantially all of it through distributors. A pair of national distributors supplies a large share of this business's revenue. Its earnings depend on infrastructure and construction demand and on the difference between pipe selling prices and PVC resin costs.
The other manufacturing businesses sell components and finished products: BTD Manufacturing makes custom metal parts for equipment manufacturers, while T.O. Plastics sells horticulture products and custom plastic packaging and parts. A small group of customers accounts for a substantial share of manufacturing revenue. Otter Tail Corp itself is a holding company that relies on cash from its subsidiaries; manufacturing and pipe-business cash can help finance utility investment, but regulatory restrictions limit how much cash the utility can distribute to the parent.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Otter Tail's earnings currently depend more on PVC-pipe prices, municipal water infrastructure demand and concentrated resin supply than this utility-heavy list suggests.
NorthWestern Energy Group, Inc. and Otter Tail's power utility both generate and deliver electricity to paying customers in South Dakota, so regional power demand and utility infrastructure investment matter to both. NorthWestern's electricity sales to households, businesses and industrial customers offer a regional comparison for Otter Tail's power business.
Alliant Energy Corporation shares Otter Tail's exposure to Midwestern electricity demand and regulated infrastructure investment: both generate and deliver electricity to paying customers. Alliant's Iowa and Wisconsin electricity sales provide a comparison for Otter Tail's upper-Midwest utility, not its manufacturing businesses.
MGE Energy Inc and Otter Tail both run relatively small regulated utilities that generate and supply electricity to customers in the upper Midwest. MGE's electricity revenue reflects a more urban customer base, so it is not a direct guide to demand in Otter Tail's mainly rural and agricultural territory.
Black Hills Corporation and Otter Tail both generate and deliver electricity to retail customers in protected service territories, making regional demand and recovery of utility investment important to both. Black Hills' retail electricity sales offer a comparison for Otter Tail's customer demand.
IDACORP, Inc.'s Idaho Power and Otter Tail both generate and supply electricity at rates designed to recover costs and earn an approved return on infrastructure investment. Watch Idaho Power's rate decisions for which costs and investments it can recover from customers; seeking a rate increase does not guarantee recovery or its timing.
Avista Corporation and Otter Tail both use their own generation and bought-in electricity to serve paying utility customers, then sell surplus power wholesale. Avista's power purchases and surplus electricity sales offer a comparison for how Otter Tail balances customer demand against its available supply.
Portland General Electric Company and Otter Tail both generate and deliver electricity to retail customers, with state-approved rates determining how they recover investment. PGE's Oregon rate decisions on recoverable investment and allowed returns provide a comparison for the regulatory decisions that shape Otter Tail's utility earnings.
OGE Energy Corp.'s OG&E and Otter Tail both generate and deliver electricity to retail customers, earning authorized capital returns and passing fuel and purchased-power costs through electricity bills. OG&E's fuel-cost adjustments provide a comparison for how Otter Tail recovers those supply costs from customers.
Deere & Company buys custom metal components from Otter Tail's BTD business, so its agricultural and turf equipment production matters to Otter Tail's fabrication demand. Watch Deere's tractor and mower production and dealer inventories: weak demand and inventory management have already reduced Otter Tail's fabrication sales.
CNH INDUSTRIAL N.V. buys metal components from Otter Tail's BTD business for the agricultural and construction equipment it sells, tying its production needs to Otter Tail's fabrication demand. CNH's agricultural equipment sales and dealer inventories are worth watching, given the weak agricultural demand and inventory management that have weighed on Otter Tail's manufacturing revenue.
Caterpillar Inc. buys custom metal components from Otter Tail's BTD business, making its equipment production relevant to Otter Tail's fabrication demand. Caterpillar manufactures construction and mining equipment and engines, selling products through independent dealers; its equipment production is the useful signal for BTD.
Housing Starts (Sep)
These readings track homebuilding activity, a construction-demand signal that can affect demand for Otter Tail’s PVC pipe and the sales volumes and prices of its Plastics segment.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More homebuilding than expected could signal stronger construction demand, supporting PVC-pipe orders and potentially helping Plastics sales volumes or prices.
If it comes in below expectations
Less homebuilding than expected could signal weaker construction demand, reducing support for PVC-pipe orders and potentially weighing on Plastics sales volumes or prices.
OGE Energy Corp. earningsOGE
OGE Energy's report will show whether its fuel-cost adjustments track fuel and purchased-power costs, a useful comparison for how Otter Tail passes those costs through to customers.
Read OGE's fuel and purchased-power costs alongside its fuel-cost adjustments. If adjustments track costs, the mechanism is passing supply-cost changes through to customers. If costs rise faster than recovery, that flags possible timing pressure; check Otter Tail's own costs and recovery rather than assuming the two utilities have the same result.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Fed rate decisions show whether borrowing is getting more or less expensive, which can change construction demand for Otter Tail’s PVC pipe and the sales prices and volumes its Plastics segment can achieve.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
Higher-than-expected rates could make borrowing more costly and weigh on housing and construction, weakening demand for PVC pipe and putting pressure on Plastics sales volumes or prices.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower-than-expected rates could ease borrowing costs and support housing and construction, strengthening PVC-pipe demand and potentially supporting Plastics sales volumes or prices.
Caterpillar Inc. earningsCAT
Caterpillar's report will show how equipment production and dealer inventories are changing, a signal of demand for custom metal components from Otter Tail's BTD business.
Read Caterpillar's equipment production alongside dealer inventories. Higher production without inventory buildup suggests equipment demand is supporting output and gives BTD's component demand more support. Production cuts or rising inventories point to weaker equipment demand and possible pressure on Otter Tail's Manufacturing sales.
Portland General Electric Company earningsPOR
Portland General Electric's report will show how Oregon regulators treat recoverable investment and allowed returns, a comparison for the regulatory decisions shaping Otter Tail's utility earnings.
Watch whether regulators let Portland General Electric recover infrastructure investment and related costs through rates and earn an allowed return. Approval supports the utility investment model; limited or delayed recovery means costs may rise before rates provide income, a regulatory risk Otter Tail also faces.
Otter Tail Corp earningsThis company
Otter Tail's Plastics segment supplies a substantial part of its earnings, and this report will show whether pipe volumes and resin costs can offset falling PVC pipe prices.
Read PVC pipe selling prices and volumes alongside Plastics segment net income. If volume grows and net income holds up as prices fall, volume and costs are cushioning the price pressure. If falling prices outweigh help from volume and costs and net income declines, Plastics earnings are moving toward normalization.
Avista Corporation earningsAVA
Avista's report will show how power purchases and surplus electricity sales balance against customer demand, a comparison for Otter Tail's own power supply.
Read Avista's power purchases alongside its surplus electricity sales. If purchases rise as surplus sales shrink, available supply is tighter relative to customer demand; compare that with Otter Tail's own generation, customer needs and wholesale sales. Continued surplus sales suggest more room in Avista's balance, though the two utilities have different supply mixes.
NorthWestern Energy Group, Inc. earningsNWE
NorthWestern's electricity sales to South Dakota households, businesses and industrial customers offer a nearby demand signal for Otter Tail's utility business.
Focus on NorthWestern's electricity sales volumes to South Dakota customers, not revenue alone, because rate changes can also lift revenue. Rising volumes suggest stronger demand nearby and can be compared with Otter Tail's service area; falling volumes point to possible regional softness, though the customer mix and territories differ.
