Mueller Water Products supplies equipment that utilities and contractors use to build and maintain water networks. Most sales serve the repair and replacement of municipal water infrastructure; residential construction is the next-largest source of demand, with smaller sales tied to natural gas utilities and industrial uses. Valves and brass service fittings form its larger business. It also supplies fire hydrants, pipe-repair equipment and systems that measure water use, detect leaks and control pressure.
The company mainly sells to waterworks distributors in the United States and Canada, which supply utilities and contractors. It also sells some metering and water-management systems directly to municipalities. Its two largest distributors account for a substantial share of sales, and it typically has no long-term contracts with them.
Demand depends on municipalities funding repairs and replacements and on housing construction that requires new water infrastructure. Municipal work relies heavily on public spending, water charges and local taxes, so infrastructure needs do not automatically become orders. Certain federally funded water projects require American iron and steel, which affects the company's sourcing and assembly practices.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Mueller Water Products’ results hinge chiefly on municipal water-infrastructure replacement, where privately held McWane and American Cast Iron Pipe Company compete in its core valves and hydrants.
Badger Meter competes with Mueller Water Products for water utilities’ spending on meters and connected water-management equipment and software. Watch its Utility Water sales—the line accounted for about 89% of 2025 net sales—for demand in the customer group both serve.
Watts Water Technologies competes with Mueller Water Products in equipment that regulates water pressure, and both sell water-flow products for residential and commercial construction. Watts’ residential and commercial flow-control and protection sales offer a read on that construction exposure, which accounted for about 25%–30% of Mueller’s fiscal 2025 net sales for residential activity alone.
Otter Tail’s plastics businesses sell municipal water pipe for the same infrastructure projects that need Mueller Water Products’ valves, hydrants and repair products. Its PVC pipe sales, primarily in the western United States and Canada, are the business to watch for this shared demand—not its electricity sales.
Gorman-Rupp shares Mueller Water Products’ exposure to municipal water-infrastructure spending: it sells pumps for municipal water and wastewater systems, while Mueller sells water-distribution valves, hydrants and repair products.
Itron competes with Mueller Water Products for utilities’ purchases of water meters and systems that connect meters to communications networks. Watch Itron’s water-metering business rather than its overall results, which also include substantial electricity and gas offerings.
Franklin Electric shares Mueller Water Products’ exposure to residential and municipal water-system investment, selling pumps and controls through distributors while Mueller supplies valves and other distribution equipment. Watch Franklin’s pumps, motors and controls for residential and commercial buildings; its agricultural sales also respond to seasonality and commodity prices.
Housing Starts (Sep)
Mueller Water Products sells valves, hydrants and other water-system products used in residential construction, so homebuilding activity can change demand for its products and the sales it earns.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More starts, permits or new-home sales than expected point to stronger building activity, which may lift orders through waterworks distributors and increase Mueller Water Products’ sales; the effect depends on when projects proceed and products are purchased.
If it comes in below expectations
Fewer starts, permits or new-home sales than expected point to weaker building activity, which may reduce distributor orders for Mueller Water Products’ products and constrain sales, especially if projects are delayed or forgone.
Badger Meter, Inc. earningsBMI
Badger Meter's report will show whether water utilities are expanding or tightening purchases of meters and connected management equipment, where it competes with Mueller Water Products.
Focus on Badger Meter's Utility Water sales, which made up about 89% of its 2025 net sales and offer a clearer read than its overall results on the utility customers both companies serve. Growth would point to ongoing demand for these purchases; a decline would suggest tighter budgets. Either result could also reflect Badger Meter's own competitive gains or losses, so it is not a direct measure of Mueller's sales.
The Gorman-Rupp Company earningsGRC
The Gorman-Rupp Company's report will show demand for pumps in municipal water and wastewater projects, offering a read on infrastructure spending for Mueller Water Products' valves, hydrants and repair products.
Read The Gorman-Rupp Company's municipal water and wastewater pump business against the fact that an estimated 60% to 65% of Mueller's sales are associated with municipal water-infrastructure repair and replacement. Strength in pumps would support the view that related projects are moving ahead, which can help demand for Mueller's valves, hydrants and repair products; weakness would raise the risk of slower or delayed projects. Pump sales are not a direct measure of Mueller's orders.
Watts Water Technologies, Inc. earningsWTS
Watts Water Technologies' report will show demand for flow-control and protection equipment in residential and commercial construction, where it competes with Mueller Water Products and Mueller also sells into residential building.
Focus on Watts' residential and commercial flow-control and protection sales, alongside the fact that about 25% to 30% of Mueller's net sales are associated with residential construction. Growth in Watts' sales would suggest that construction demand may support Mueller's related business; a decline would point to possible pressure. Watts' results also reflect its own market share and product mix, so they cannot by themselves prove a change in Mueller's demand.
Mueller Water Products, Inc. earningsThis company
Mueller Water Products' report will show whether sales from water-system repairs and construction can keep pace with pressure from material and manufacturing costs.
Read sales in Water Flow Solutions and Water Management Solutions alongside gross margin, the share of sales left after product costs. Growth in both businesses with a steady or rising margin would show that volume, pricing and manufacturing efficiency are still offsetting inflation and tariffs; weaker sales or a falling margin would show that project demand or price increases are not covering costs, leaving profit more exposed.
