Badger Meter helps water utilities measure customers’ water use for billing and monitor water quality and wastewater systems. Its BlueEdge offerings connect meters and sensors with communications, software and support. Utilities pay for the equipment and associated software and services, providing the large majority of the company’s revenue.
ORION Cellular devices transmit meter readings over cellular networks, so utilities do not have to install and maintain their own collection networks. BEACON cloud software turns those readings into dashboards and alerts and lets customers view and manage water use. A smaller business sells instruments that measure and control fluids to commercial and industrial customers.
The utility business is concentrated in North America, primarily the United States, but no single customer dominates sales. Demand depends on utilities’ budgets and ability to fund meter replacements and system upgrades. Earnings also depend on what they buy: connected meters, software and monitoring products generally carry higher margins than basic meters.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Xylem competes with Badger Meter for utilities’ smart-meter spending through Sensus, while its broader water equipment draws on the same utility investment budgets. Watch its smart-metering business rather than total sales for a closer read on demand for Badger Meter’s connected meters.
Itron competes with Badger Meter to sell utilities water meters, networks that carry meter readings, and software that uses the data. Its water-related business is the relevant demand signal for Badger Meter, since Itron also serves electricity and gas utilities.
Mueller Water Products competes with Badger Meter for utilities’ meter purchases and also sells valves, hydrants and monitoring products funded by water-infrastructure spending. Its metering business is the closer comparison; valve and hydrant sales offer a broader view of spending on water distribution systems.
Roper Technologies competes directly with Badger Meter through Neptune, which sells water meters to utilities, but Roper’s overall business is predominantly software. Watch Neptune’s metering business for the competitive signal, rather than Roper’s consolidated growth.
Veralto competes with Badger Meter’s water-quality products through Hach, which sells water-testing and analysis solutions to utilities and industrial customers. Demand from Hach’s utility customers is the part to watch for clues about Badger Meter’s water-quality business.
Hubbell competes with Badger Meter through Aclara in smart water metering and systems that transmit meter readings to utilities. Watch Aclara’s water-metering and communications business, since Hubbell also sells a much broader range of utility infrastructure equipment.
Badger Meter, Inc. earningsThis company
Badger Meter's report will show whether Utility Water sales and the margin contribution of connected meters and software are supporting its business.
Read Utility Water sales alongside gross margin. Growing sales with a stable or wider margin would show that utilities are still buying and that higher-value connected products are supporting profitability. Weaker sales with a narrowing margin would point to pressure on project demand, product mix, or both.
Itron Inc earningsITRI
Itron's report offers a read on water-business demand because it and Badger Meter both sell utilities meters, communications networks, and software.
Look for Itron's comments on water demand, separately from its electricity and gas businesses. Resilient water demand would suggest utilities are still funding meters, communications networks, and software, supporting the market Badger Meter sells into. Weaker water demand would point to tighter customer budgets and more pressure on Badger Meter's related products. This is an industry signal, not a result for Badger Meter itself.
Xylem Inc earningsXYL
Xylem's report can show the breadth of utility water spending: it competes with Badger Meter for smart-meter budgets and also sells other water equipment.
Separate Xylem's smart-metering performance from its broader water-equipment business. Strength in both would suggest utilities are funding smart meters as well as wider water-system investment, supporting Badger Meter's customer budgets. If smart metering holds up but broader equipment weakens, utilities may be protecting meter projects while tightening other spending.
Veralto Corporation earningsVLTO
Veralto's report offers a demand signal from Hach's water-testing business, which, like Badger Meter's water-quality offering, serves utility and industrial customers.
Watch what Veralto says about demand from Hach's water customers. Strong demand would suggest utilities and industrial customers are still paying for water testing and analysis, supporting the market for Badger Meter's water-quality business. Weaker demand would signal pressure, but could reflect Hach-specific competition rather than a broad market slowdown.
