Company

Company overview

M&T Bank Corp. is a bank holding company whose main banking business serves consumers and businesses in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States. Through M&T Bank, it gathers customer deposits and uses that funding to make business, property and consumer loans. It also holds interest-earning securities, largely government-issued or guaranteed. The difference between interest earned and funding costs supplies most of its revenue, with loans its largest source of interest income.

Customers also pay for account services and mortgage servicing. Through Wilmington Trust and its other banking operations, M&T earns fees for managing wealth and acting as trustee or administrator for individuals, companies and institutions. These services add income alongside its larger lending and deposit business.

The business depends on retaining customer deposits, borrowers repaying their loans, and the gap between lending and funding rates. Its regional lending footprint ties it closely to economic conditions in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Banking capital and liquidity rules limit how much it can lend, expand and distribute to shareholders.

  • Fifth Third Bancorp offers a close operating comparison for M&T: both run similarly sized banks lending to businesses and consumers and managing clients’ wealth. Compare loan growth, deposit costs and commercial credit losses to distinguish regional-bank pressures from M&T’s own performance.
