Company

Company overview

Wells Fargo serves individuals, businesses and institutions, primarily in the United States. Customers use it to hold deposits, make payments and borrow money. It relies mainly on customer deposits to fund loans and operations, and earns interest from borrowers and securities it holds. After paying interest on deposits and other funding, the remaining interest income supplies most of its revenue. Consumer and small-business banking and lending is its largest revenue segment.

The company also helps businesses raise financing and execute financial-market transactions, and helps wealthy clients manage investments. These customers pay banking, investment banking, brokerage and advisory fees; customer trading also generates income from transaction-price differences. Investment advisory fees are generally tied to the value of client assets, so market values and money entering or leaving accounts affect this income.

Its core banking earnings depend on deposit availability and cost, borrowers’ repayment, and how quickly loan and securities yields change relative to funding costs. Capital and liquidity rules constrain lending and shareholder distributions, while the parent depends on subsidiary payments that laws and regulators can restrict. The Federal Reserve has removed its former asset-growth cap, but the consent order’s remaining governance, compliance and operational-risk requirements continue to apply.
